Wow...bang, and you guys have the answer. What a great forum. OK, I've done as several of you instructed, and she shifts fine if I tap one of the pedals lightly. Works best I've found if I don't have the parking brake on so the tractor can move the tiniest bit.

I'm wondering if the balkiness could be improved with a slight adjustment. It's almost as though one of the go pedals was just ever so slightly depressed all the time so that the hydro pump valve was cracked open putting pressure on the drive train and preventing things from freely moving to line up.

Hey Mike--the 100 bucks sounds great. I need a ship-to address to be able to get my tractor loaded up and on the way to you. It'll be packaged in a big black wooden box with a label on the side that reads "John Deere 4120 Inside--Just for Mike". And don't worry about all the wires and stuff or the ticking; just open up and enjoy! I feel less confused already....Just kidding!

Once I figure out how, I'll put the photo in the gallery area, whatever that is. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks a lot for the help guys. I'm out the door. Time for some tractoring.

The photos are in the Deere Gallery. The originals are larger and sharper if anyone wants them emailed. Cheers.

Glad that helped. but on my kubota u can not start it if it is in any range . must be in netural, and clutch depressed. when i shift into range, i depress the clutch and shift, if it don't want to engage i just tap hydro pedal and try again. works every time.

My New Holland has to be in one of the two nuetrals. You don't have to have the clutch in. You also have to have the two pto's in nuetral. As far as going in gear, when new it was tough to get in, just had to push the hydro pedal one way or the other and it went it. You could hear gears grind a bit so then I started using the clutch. As time goes it no longer needs that service, it just goes in.
