YM 1700
Hey folks,
Finally bought a YM 1700. Sure glad I found this sight for all the info. Feel like I know everyone here since I've been reading the posts for days.
Any info on upkeep or anything would be greatly appreciated.
How do I read the Japanese labels???
Where is the VIN # that I need?
/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifThanks

You should be able to locate the engine label pretty easilly... That has your engine number on it.. and other than a few small oddities.. most things go off model number.

The 1700 is a great machine.

Change the oil and filters in it once a year at least and it should serve you well.

I run power service in my diesels.. some prefer other fuel addatives.. etc.

Grab a manual for the 195/240 and it will be close... also.. the jap parts manual is available.

A napa oil filter crossover is available.. and the air filter from yanmar is the 'best' fit.

Don't use the compression release to shut the tractor down.

As Soundguy said get the manual for the US-sold YM195/YM240. Several dealers who post here will have it. I got mine as a CD from ebay. The YM195 is nearly identical to your YM1700, the only difference I can think of is an overrun clutch in its PTO.

The engine model plate is by the starter and the engine number is stamped nearby. On the YM240, the chassis # is stamped by my left ankle but I'm not certain it is in that place on the Japanese-sold tractors.

If all your labels are in Japanese then you got a good tractor, apparently straight from Japan without a need for reconditioning its appearance.

You can get a set of English-language labels from several dealers who post here.

Welcome aboard!

Soundguy: where do you find Power Service? I tried several of the auto stores (eg Autozone) and they never heard of it. Tnx, Steve

I get Power Service fuel conditioner from Wal-Mart.

Thanks for the info. The tractor does have all Japanese labels on it. The paint looks great. Only one little dent on the front above the headlights. There is no doubt it was stored inside. It's the original paint but no doubt had a great owner. Hour meter has 550 hours on it. All the hoses and fluids were changed. The front tires have a little dry rot so I'll be looking to replace. Starts right up, sounds great, shifts like a new one. How can I find out what year this was made? Can't wait to get busy on it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Aaron at Hoye Tractor has great tire prices unless you can get them locally for a better price.

Sure wish my tractor had been stored indoors! The Yanmar green might polish out to look half decent but that Great Bend loader is hopeless.

The concensus here is run tires at least till you see cord. There isn't a safety hazard like a highway vehicle. You probably have several years left.

Power Service additive helps cold starting. You may not need it. AutoZone stocks it where I live.

Year model: The first-series tractors had headlights bolted alongside the radiator. Those tractors were green. First-series ended about 1978. Second-series had headlights side by side in the top of the grille. On the Japanese-market tractors, they started painting them red at that point. The tractors for the US market (YM195,YM240) continued with green paint through the end of second series, last sold about 1982 (?). This may be a year or two later than the 2 cylinder models were superceded in Japan.

Yanmar never defined year models but the parts books show four revision levels after 1975 so you can estimate the year. On the US ones, the final revision is obvious with an external pre-cleaner ahead of the air cleaner. Mine is level 3 with the air cleaner on the intake manifold, sold in about 1980. When you see a parts book you can match some features on your tractor to the revision levels it shows. Always provide engine and chassis number when ordering parts.

Enjoy your new tractor!

Ditto above... Power service can be found at wallymart and TSC

And tires... I've got a 52 ford that has at least one origianl rear on it.. and a 42 2n with one original front tire on a spare rim... Run it till it blows off the rim.. unless you do highway driving.
