Hey ststutter, good to hear from you and I look forward to hearing/seeing more about your tractor. I'm still pinching myself that I actually own a "real" tractor.

mikehaugen, we are practically neighbors. I live in Sterling and just googled Lee and see we aren't far apart! I also just heard about McGrew's place in New Paris this morning, so I'll be getting in touch with them soon.

I did some preliminary testing and the gears in the front axle seem to work. I put the tractor in nuetral and when spinning the shaft by hand for the front axle the tractor moved forward. Likewise, when I disengage the MFWD with lever by the seat, the output shaft spins freely, and when I engage the lever the shaft only spins with movement of the rear wheels. I'm crossing my fingers that I only need the shaft and no internal parts are trashed.

Luckily, since the JD 4005 is really the same tractor, comparable parts should be available. Of course if you can find a junked 1070 that would be cheaper. Same with the loader, I bet a 300cx would fit a 1070 but that not going to be a bargain. I think the hydraulic lines switched sides at some point in the history of the 1070 or 990, so then you'd need another adapter which would cost yet more money. So finding an old loader is definitely preferable. The 440 loader was the best, I think it specs out better than a 300cx?

when I was looking for mine, I had read the the 400x (maybe 400cx) was pretty comparable.

sethro, there is a parts guy at the hogan walker dealer in Elburn that seems very knowledgeable. His name is Shane and lives in Rochelle and does work out of his shop. He's a good guy, and like I said seems very knowledgeable- if I ever need work outside of my abilities I would probably have him do it.
