Congratulations and welcome. You have a fine package of equipment there, and you will probably enjoy many years of using it on your place. Just curious what your plans are for that boom sprayer.

I have five good sized horse pastures and two miles of forest road needing various types of spraying. I also have a lot blackberry bushes I like to keep them contained! If I found the right kind of spray I would like to eliminate most of those acres of black berries.

Welcome Cotton,

I use Ortho Brush Begone on Poison Ivy, works great. Can't say about those blackberry's but it seems to kill anything and everything it come in contact with, trees included. Good Luck with the new Tractor.

How much does the Ortho Brush Begone cost? what kind of concentration? When you use that stuff how far do you stay away from the trees? How careful about the splashes? The previous owner of my new property use Roundups.

Cotton,

I suspect you could contact Ortho about the application. I used it in a hand operated dispenser, and bought it at WalMart. It was concetrated, and added water, also had a warning about spraying when wind was blowing, as it could kill tomato plants for quite a distance. I would have loved to had a big tank for the tractor, but didn't.

Good Luck, Les

I used both the ortho and the regular roundup products on a pasture of roughly 5 acers of briar. While it did devastate it fairly well, it was probably only a 75% kill, and re-growth popped back within weeks. ( I would have thought it would have been better.. like 90%+.. )

I use proper dilution. Eventually I disc'd the tar out of the pasture, and now briar population is sparse but still present.

I don't want to use any more herbacides as I'd like to get the grass going again.

Welcome Cotton. I used this site for a long time before I actually registered and found it to be wonderful place to gather information. The members here are really knowlegable and very helpful.
The site I use most for spaying and weed identification and control information is Dow Chemical and I used the Texas A&M website for the information on how to calibrate my tank sprayer for pasture use, rather than just for spot spraying).
Have fun and once again, welcome.

Thanks for the info. The sprayer I got does have a hand gun for hand operation and I suspect that there will be many spots I need to use the hand gun. The DOW and Texas A&M sites are excellent references and I bookmarked both of them. I intend to go back to learn more as I get to be more proficient with the spraying operations.

I love to avoid the use of herbacides as much as possible so, when possible, I take my front loader and using the cutting edge on float (this means dropping the cutting edge down until it will touch the ground and push the loader joystick all the way forward, the arms can then follow the contours of the land) and backdrag my weeds and briars pulling many of them out by the roots. The tough ones, I go back and dig forward with the FEL as it will go 2-3 inches down and get em. Just be sure to go slowly if you try this so as to avoid stressing the loader bucket. You will have to learn to adjust the angle of the loader cutting edge to best advantage. Then you don't have to kill everything in site and some not in site. BTW, welcome to TBN. In no time, you'll be a city feller who's tractor savvy! John
