Getting started...I had no real cutting tool. Skill saw and a cuttling blade. Scrap came from the recycling place.

Sorry about the title, my 'older' abused fingers don't work as well anymore. Is there spell check on this listserve....ha

You can't change a title. Once you post it, you're stuck with it. It's not a big deal as most of us have also made as spelling mistake or two!!

I'm planning on building a canopy also, so I'm looking forward to seeing how yours comes out. Are you going to put front supports on it? From hearing from those who have, they say it's a big difference in stiffness.

Eddie,

I hadn't planned on a front support. But, I will see how stiff it is once it's built. I could add them later if necessary. I plan on using 2"x2" 1/8" angle on it and a diamond plate top with the diamond plate on the underside, shiny side up. I will be adding firewall insulation under to keep some of the heat away.

The scrap cost me 10.00 for the supports. I have most of the angle and the diamond plate. I need another 8' feet of 2x2 angle which I will get from the recycle place today, firewall insulation (should be around 20.00), the brackets, and a rattle can of paint. I checked on a 'frame only' from the local massy dealer and they wanted 268.00 for it. I'll come in much less and it's kind of a fun project.

Eddie I bow to you on the lake project. I am totally impressed. My little projects don't even come close to your skills!!!

Very interesting. Went to the recycling place and a 8' section of 2x2x1/8" angle is almost as expensive as buying the whole 20' stick because they charge a 'cut charge'. For $10.00 more I bought the whole stick and they cut in half for free. Steel prices are sky rocketing along with fuel. Steel roofing prices have jumped 10% since the first bid on the soon-to-be new cabin late last year. I am scared to see the new bid we are getting. Carpeting prices have jumped twice since last year due to fuel prices. I bought the carpet last year because I know the prices were going up.

Anyway, I have changed my mind. I am going to go back and buy 1x1x1/8" verses the 2x2 since I have to buy 20' feet of it. I'll use the 2x2 for another project down the line. The diamond plate doesn't weigh much and if its too heavy (with 2x2) it may bounce around up and down on bumps. I will see how it looks once I get the 1x1x1/8" welded up.

Regards

$42.26 for 4 stainless steel square bend u-bolts 1/2" x 2" x 3 1/2" with SS nylon nuts and washers. $52.26 into the project so far. Need to go back and buy the 1x1 angle and the insutation for the roof. Probably cost me 10 bucks or so to have a sheet metal shop bend the diamond plate on the sides. Trying to come in under a 100 dollars...ha

Marked one side support and drilled it out. I drilled the other side out using the first drilled support. Put them on on the ROPS using the u-bolts and cut the sides, clamped them on and then cut the ends. Pulled it back down and welded the box and then the supports to the box. The 1x1x1/8" was .91 a foot.
