I'm just wondering if anybody out there has used any of the new pressure treated wood yet. Personally I have not yet, but our local lumbar yard salesman told us that the price has jumped 21% plus you must use hotdipped galvenized nails or else the new chemical in it will corrode the nails

You are correct.

Ordinary galvanizing (G60) may not even be enough.

You may want a heavier G90 or better thickness.

Builders Beware

Just now appearing on our shelves at my lowe's. Smells funny, Costs about a dollar more a board on average. Hot dipped galvanized is correct.
All our Simpson ties have changed over. Simpson has a special designation of Z in their part#. The old ties don't have enough galvanizeing. (sp?)

If it's ACQ treated wood, you also need to be aware that it corrodes aluminum as well. Be careful how you flash things like a deck against the house, etc.

My neighbor, a retired chemist and director of research for a major pharma corp, told me that the new compound is very similar to the pre-CCA formula. The problems associated with the new formula are well known to the older contractors. FYI - I have always stored, air-dried, and sealed my CCA posts before putting them in the ground. I had a lab test the soil around the post after 2 years - barely detectable. Direct burial of untreated CCA posts indeed causes leaching and is readily detectable. The lab told me that the problem is really one of manufacturing technique. The CCA that leaches is primarily the unabsorbed residue. If there were a way to rinse off the excess, 75% of the CCA ground contamination could be avoided. Also, since the yellow pine in CCA lumber is not exactly dried the best [you can add understatement here], letting it dry before sealing it with an oil based sealer, is a must. Why talk about CCA when it is being removed from the marketplace? The lab's asst director told me that it was better [if prepared correctly] and safer than the previous formula. And it's that guy's $.02 I'd like to give you.

Paulk , that was an interesting reply, I've never tried "sealing" a post before, it makes sense to me. Unfortuneltley when we're building a deck or pole barn we don't have time for drying or sealing.
What gets me is that 5 years from now they( whoever they maybe) will find something wrong with this new treated

Where would the average TBN'er find these "souped-up" nails?

When I was at the lumber store yesterday ordering the shingles for my garage he asked about siding and what I was doing. He was concerned that I was using steel with the new PT lumber. Typically though you would have 2x4 between the poles and the siding - maybe he is talking on the bottom skirt board though, I'm not sure. I'm not using steel, so I'm not too concerned, but how are people handling this problem?

Think about nails too...

Does the new pressure treated wood come in different levels of treatment? What level of treatment would you use for ground burial (as in pole barns)?
