Yeah, that sounds weird, don't it?

So...

1,769,472 cubic quarter inches X 0.00108225 gallons = 1915.011072 gallons!

Someone double check my math....

Very Approx. 24 x 32 feet = 7.3 x 9.7 = 70.8 sq m

70.8 x 0.00625m (approx 1/4") = 0.4425 cu m = 442.5 Litres

442.5/3.785 = 114.2 US gallons.

OR

768sq ft x 0.02" (1/50th of a foot near enough to a quarter inch) = 15.36 cu ft

15.36 x 6.25 (number of Imperial gallons in a cubic foot) = 96 Imperial gallons

96 x 1.2 (US gal in 1 Imp gal) = 115.2 US gallons.

OR

each sq ft gives about 0.15 of a US gallon for each quarter inch of rain.

Now check my maths!

Soooo...... if it rains at 1/4 inch/hour - the 1000 gallon tank would be full in a little less than ten hours. Hmmmmm

If you are concerned about algae growth - add a little bleach every so often. And I won't go thru the math on that!!

Jim have a rancher friend that bought a used propane tank. Don't remember size but around 20 feet long and 6 feet high. heavy enough it took a truck to drag to top of his ranch to fill and keep stock tanks filed across his land. and in the past 20 years still in use. also supplies his home and 2 children's home rust in water has never been mentioned.

Does a propane tank rust. exposed to weather and remains looking useable. I dug up a buried propane tank and after washing looked like always had been sitting above ground.

The pipe fitting are standred you have a fill and use nipples already welded then built in fill level
also.
Weather man says you have above average rain this year. cactus will bloom and same for the flowers.

I've used a fair number of the 20# tanks for various projects, and they do rust when exposed to water. That your buddy has had different luck is nice, or maybe their water filter is removing the rust before they see it?

These tanks are heavy enough that they're not going to rust out in anyone's lifetime.

Under ground is an oxygen starved environment unless the soils are very light. Sinking logs in lakes keeps them from rotting too. ;)

Not sure I see the reasoning behind using a tank designed for so much pressure for water storage? Go buy a couple of those 300 gallon totes for water storage. Those are easy to use and move around.

If you are looking for a welding project there may be better ways to utilize a propane tank. I"ve been trying to figure out a use for a 1,000 gallon tank as they are only $750 from this place.
Used Propane Tanks - Repurposed Materials

In our area there are several welders making incinerators out of propane tanks. Cut one end off and attach a sheet of steel with chains. The idea is to make a trap door on the bottom. They cut a door in the side at about 2/3rd's up and weld on a latch and hinges. Weld a chimney on the top and lifting lugs on the sides and you have an incinerator. My neighbour fills his all the way before he light's the garbage inside. It get's hot enough to burn up diapers. When it's full he borrows his boss's telehandler and with the lifting lugs lifts the whole tank up over a truck. One chain is in a slot on the bottom flap. You hit the chain out with a hammer and the whole flap swings down to empty the incinerator. They sell for about $1200.

I can't... my head hurts...

That sounds a lot more reasonable.

The math sounds right but it doesn't work in real life. All I know is that when my rain gauge showed "about" 1/4", I could usually count on the tank being full again. I don't use a micrometer to measure the rainfall. Whether it rained at a rate of 1" per hour for 15 minutes or rained all night for a total of 1/4" It didn't seem to matter. I also know that if you leave a pan out in the rain and it rains 1/4" by the rain gauge, the pan will have more than a 1/4" of water in it. Can't explain it but it will. Perhaps it's the way rain gauges are calibrated or the fact that it can be raining here at the house and be bone dry down the driveway. All I care about is what I get in the tank. ;)

The barn I'm collecting rain water from is 32x30 with a 2 in 16 pitch on corrugated steel roof. So do you increase the surface area for corrugated steel? I don't know. I have rain gutters that dump the water into 4" drain pipes under ground. The tank is under ground and I have the inlet/outlet reversed since one is lower than the other. I have the high end (tank inlet) connected to drain pipe with a drain cap and it functions as an overflow release at ground level.

Oh, and there's about six feet of extra roof on one side for the entire length (32') That side has an entrance door, chicken run and chicken coop under it.

Added this post since the EDIT sucks big time.
