This is all too funny, since it is pretty evident that Power Trac doesn't sub anything out. They even weld up their own mufflers for the gas powered units. For better or worse, they build everything they can in-house.
I am fairly sure that the way it works is the central government finds a product being manufactured elsewhere that has a market, they reverse engineer the unit (trademarks and patents be damned), and freely distribute the plans to half a dozen or so factories to start churning out knockoffs for sale on the gray market. In some instances an American Importer provides plans and specifications and QA inspectors, but the whole industry primarily just sprang into existance out of the ether.horse7 said:I'm sure PT has a never ending stream of Chinese companies lining up at their door trying to convince them to sub out to China...
Clarke said:Oh don't get me wrong I love my PT 425. It's the most useful tool I have ever purchased. However, I don't have to love the reliability and workmanship on the machine. Mine has broken down many times in the 400+ hrs of use. Granted I have used the machine hard. I purchased the 425 because of the commercial build. My new problem is the weld on the bottom right side of the hudraulic tank starting to open up and seep oil. What I am saying, is the quality of my PT 425 (not your PT) might be equal to chinese quality. Even with this last annoying problem I still like my PT. I have pretty good records of the problems and cost and started a spread sheet to track hourly operating cost disregarding the cost of the machine and depreciation. Its pretty scary.

Maybe 1/3 of their tool line is made in Taiwan. They have onsite engineers/QA inspectors enforcing the standards of their products coming from all the factories. By and large they succeed. You can still tell which of their tools come from China by the lack of finish detail. I have a drill press that was made in China, and an edge sander that was made in Taiwan. World of difference.gotago said:I think Grizzly is actually Taiwanese, it's the really cheap stuff that comes out of China.
