This is all too funny, since it is pretty evident that Power Trac doesn't sub anything out. They even weld up their own mufflers for the gas powered units. For better or worse, they build everything they can in-house.

I'm sure PT has a never ending stream of Chinese companies lining up at their door trying to convince them to sub out to China...
I am fairly sure that the way it works is the central government finds a product being manufactured elsewhere that has a market, they reverse engineer the unit (trademarks and patents be damned), and freely distribute the plans to half a dozen or so factories to start churning out knockoffs for sale on the gray market. In some instances an American Importer provides plans and specifications and QA inspectors, but the whole industry primarily just sprang into existance out of the ether.

PT should be counting their blessings that the Chinese haven't discovered their product or that the Chinses think there is only a limited market for it. Who knows, in a few years we might see some Chinese hydraulic powered golf carts manufactured out of 3/16" steel, available with a lifting arm as an option.

Oh don't get me wrong I love my PT 425. It's the most useful tool I have ever purchased. However, I don't have to love the reliability and workmanship on the machine. Mine has broken down many times in the 400+ hrs of use. Granted I have used the machine hard. I purchased the 425 because of the commercial build. My new problem is the weld on the bottom right side of the hudraulic tank starting to open up and seep oil. What I am saying, is the quality of my PT 425 (not your PT) might be equal to chinese quality. Even with this last annoying problem I still like my PT. I have pretty good records of the problems and cost and started a spread sheet to track hourly operating cost disregarding the cost of the machine and depreciation. Its pretty scary.

How do you plan to deal with that tank leak?

On my 1850 I have a crack at the upper Left side of my oil tank where the tank meets the frame rail. I am taking it in to be welded but not until this winter.

I think Grizzly is actually Taiwanese, it's the really cheap stuff that comes out of China. I have a planer, joiner, band saw and 2 table saws by Grizzly, bought them all used and they worked great, service and support is top notch and if you by a used tool, the parts manual and operating manual are available in PDF at the Grizzly web site. Terry is great, but better documentation and support would be the icing on the PT cake. My ramblings over but the elbow at the gas tank is a weak link, mine leaked. Easy repair. Also a trip to any of the Grizzly show rooms is worth while.

Right now its just wet in that area so I may not mess with it till later this winter. To repair it I think I will drain the tank and jack the PT up on the other two wheels. Grind a v groove in the area of the defective weld. Clean the area inside and out. Dispel any O2 in the tank with argon or nitrogen and reweld.

don't wait too long to fix that joint. it doesn't take long for it to open up. oil loss can make a real mess. at least it did with mine.

Maybe 1/3 of their tool line is made in Taiwan. They have onsite engineers/QA inspectors enforcing the standards of their products coming from all the factories. By and large they succeed. You can still tell which of their tools come from China by the lack of finish detail. I have a drill press that was made in China, and an edge sander that was made in Taiwan. World of difference.
