Ford is launching the plug in hybrid electric F150 for MY2020. It should be a borg warner transmission with integrated motor similar to the new Range Rover P400e in concept. Rivian, Tesla, Workhorse, and Bollinger have pressed big auto into action, and it can't come too soon. The plug in hybrid will be the rural lifestyle's best friend, and the pure electrics should rightly dominate the city where the distances are shorter and the pollution is a pressing concern. The more distance I can cover with energy produced on the homestead the better, and towing and hauling with an all electric, diesel-electric or gas-electric will put all these current pickups to shame. More torque, power, and drivetrain longevity, less maintenance. The engines run where they are happiest and only when necessary. A match made in heaven! Locomotives figured that out nearly a century ago now. Batteries are finally good enough we can have truly flexible fuel vehicles that get cleaner and more flexible every single year, more electrons from the sun, wind, biomass, woodgas, and less miles on old stinky fossilized plants. Exciting times!
