7' Ugly Stik Catfish rod, very heavy bottom section with a relatively light tip, don't have the rod here at work, if you Google search the Ugly Stik Catfish rods you will see there are several choices. We use medium duty saltwater open face spinning reels with 20lb braid. My first experience using braid, the stuff is amazing. We fish rubber frogs, mice and weedless horny toads in cover so thick you would never think you would get you lure back. First time my neighbor took me out for snakeheads I thought he was pulling my leg, never fished in cover that thick. As a bonus there are always some nice largemouths hanging out as well.
Need the length and the extended butt of the Ugly Stick Catfish to make the long casts (two hands) way back into the weeds. The large (think small broomstick) butt end of the rod allows you to horse the fish back to the boat. Snakeheads will explode on the lure often times breaching the surface before heading back into the weeds. Scares the #$%^@ out of you when they hit a lure hard. They are a handful when you get them back to the boat, use large plier like device to grab their lower jaw to unhook them boop them on the head with a billy club, sometime requires several applications. You don't want one in the boat with you. Very slimly, very strong and normally a bad attitude. Lot's of fun and very good eating. They should change the name to "Chinese Dragon Fish" or something more appealing, lots of folks turned off by the Snakehead moniker.
