New saw 390xpg

I have to tell you guys, moving up to a bigger saw is making my life easier already. Have only done 1 log so far and being able to do the log in one go vs 2 with my poulan 16" makes all the difference, not to mention the speed at which it will cut.

It was well worth the money ($1200cad w/taxes, 2 chains, shipped, and 24" bar) ... quite a bit more than the poulan ($200 or so), but given I already blew one up earlier this year, cost of ownership will be lower.

Something for those of you using the poulan saws and similar big box chains to think about: The depth gauges and anti kick back links come standard too tall to get a good cut, you will probably notice a lot of saw dust and not chips. It's just their way of making people buy more chains than necessary to do a job. With the small saws you can pretty much trim them down about 3/4mm or so and they will cut much better.

Nice saw!

I have a Poulan similar to yours, except it is the 42CC 18" model. I have cut about 12 cords of firewood with it so far, but most of that is 12" and under. They have them on sale at Rural King for $149.00 this week. That's about eight or nine Poulans to one of yours. After using the 18" Poulan for 2 seasons, I can honestly say it is underpowered. If I set it on a log with a good chain and let gravity take it down, once it gets down to 12-14" it can slow and stop the chain. I have to either lift it or change the angle to get less of a bite. For my needs, it is fine, as I have acres and acres of 12" and under locust. But for anything larger, the Poulan needs some modification to get it to produce more power. There are many posts on the Internet pertaining to porting the muffler and adjusting the carb to get the most out of those Poulan saws. Once my warranty expires, I may go that route, although, at only $149.00, it isn't that big of a deal if I kill it.

I think the biggest kick I'm getting from the saw is not having to work as long ... I was really trying to keep this poulan from blowing up like the other, so sticking inside the 30 second run time and what not ... was just taking a lot of time to get the work done

when the blade is sharp and the gauges trimmed down its a handy little saw for limbing and close in work that isn't terribly suitable for the bigger saw so I hope it survives all the work I have for it
