I'm going to guess one of two things happened. Either the installer let a biggish rock roll down the sidewall and smack the tank, or they didn't use the right sling and spreader bar to lower it into the hole. Wrapping the tank with a chain is fairly common, but it pulls the walls together and it can do a lot of damage.Presumably it happened then and not back at the yard, or someone would have noticed when it was on the truck. Its almost impossible to patch them, especially from the inside, so make sure you get a new one.

You did say lots of rain, I'll bet a rock tumbled (washed) down and hit the side and caused that problem.

I think cracks may happen more than people realize. A friend of mine has an above ground septic tank that is being used as a water tank for his spring water supply system, and it has a big crack in it from the installation. So he has about 2/3 of the water holding capacity he was supposed to have because of the crack.

Have they tried hydraulic cement to repair the crack?

I don't believe he tried any kind of patch because he wasn't happy with the installation. He bought three other tanks to increase his storage capacity, and they are still sitting in his field. Then he lost his job here and had to move to another state to find work. Whoever buys his house will get to decide what to do next.
