I'm in the process of obtaining quotes for a new shop building. I'm looking at a 40 X 60 and have been going back and forth with myself on height and materials.

I've gotten a quote from BCI Barn for a 40x60x12 with 2 16'x10' garage door openings (no doors), 1 walk in door and 4 windows; insulated under roof and walls. They came back with $17,500.00 erected. I'd still need to buy doors and have the floor poured.

I got another quote for a "TopLine Building" which is all steel 40x60x14 with one insulated 16x10 door with opener, one 10x10 door with no opener, one 3 x 7 walk in door, 4" of insulation under roof and all walls, with a 6" concrete floor w'/ rebar 2' O.C. for right around $30,000.00. They spec'd it at a 1-12 pitch on the roof, but I'm going to have them re-quote with a 2-12 pitch with poly-butyl mastic on roofing seams, a 16x12 door with opener and wainscotting.

Once I price doors, concrete, etc for the pole barn it sounds like the all steel is the way to go.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of "TopLine Buildings" products?

I'm looking for any inputs that might help me decide between these two. I'm still waiting on some quotes from other outfits.

I look forward to reading your inputs/suggestions.

Welcome aboard Bugboy.
I'm in the process of getting a couple of quotes and have read many question on here about getting quotes. You have to make sure you're comparing apples to apples.
What size poles are being used, how far apart are the poles? What size side nailers and how far apart? The gauge of steel being used. What size roof purlins and the spacing of them. Spacing of the trusses? These are some of what can make a difference in price quotes.

I'm leaning toward someone that will somewhat over build the barn, but it's a little more expensive.

After months of research and quotes, I went with National Barn. I went with a 30x50x12. They did an awesome job of building it and by the time all was said and done, with concrete floor, came in well under budget. They also offer a discount if you are a referral.

Bugboy: Regardless of the company you ultimately choose, I think you should consider more insulation. My 40 X 60 shop is used as a furniture shop. I need to be able to work summer or winter (I'm also in Kansas). My ceiling has 12" of insulation and I used a blown insulation with netting in the walls. With the 5 1'2 posts, and 1 1/2" purlins (maybe wrong term) on the walls, I was able to blow 7" of insulation in the walls.

Good luck with your project.

I havn't used those two builders/products.. but do have a semi finished barn building with conventional stud framing, vinyl siding, and asphalt shingles.. 2 9' garage doors, and one entry door, one window.. not finished on the inside.. just the osb and studs.. was a pre- engineered setup with the walls pre fabbed and set on a sloab.. cost was about 18K for a 24x30 building. I just put a 30x50 metal building up... no slab.. just hurricane tiedowns to anchor the metal frame to the graded building pad I made.. cost was about 8K$.. has about 13' clearance, plus anpther 4' above that in the metal rafters at the top of the pitch.. nice drive thru parking or work area. I think I'me going to bring in gravel and put down as a floor and spread it 4" deep or so.

Chris, not to sound crazy and not knowing how the interior is laid out would it be possible to "raise up" the whole building so you could get 14 feet? It seems to me that this would work for you and not cost an arm and a leg. Your thoughts?

More pitch on the roof, lots more insulation, and insulate your floor if you have any intention of working there in the winter. Put the heat in the floor if you can and you will be cozy!

If he can afford a boat that big. A small 20x30x16 should be a pittance. :D :D

I think I'll stick with 12' walls. I have a boat (and wished I didn't) and I don't see any reason why I would want to park a neighbors equipment inside my building.

Any more height just increases heating and construction costs. I have additional storage elsewhere (app. 50' x 60' two story barn, 10' x 30' shed, 12' x 60 leanto).

I'm going to start requesting more bids on 40' x 60' x12' with 2 12' x 10' doors, 1 walk door, insulation in roof and walls. I don't plan to heat this building other than trying to keep it above freezing. I may get a "torpedo" type heater to bring the temp up if I plan on working there for an extended period.

I may get it bid with interior liner panels or I may install them later. Additional insulation can always be added later.
