Craig, did you price the Commander 800, or just the 1000? That 800's still a 45-50 MPH machine, that's Canadian built, and might be a decent value for you?

My experiance with Skidoo, bombardier, and Can-Am is that the Ontario/Quebec border is just as expensive as the Canadian/US one...........Craig

I have a 2010 Ranger 800XP in Camo. Absolutely love it. The 3 wide seating is a real plus for me with the grandkids. As a side note...the Camo finish is real tough...VERY glad I chose that vs either the paint or unpainted plastic.

Also, one thing I wish I had is the power steering. Turning is fine until you need to turn in a very tight space...say turning around mid trail. The power steering would really help. If Polaris comes up with some other new features that I like I may even trade in the future to get the power steering. Mind you not for absolute NEED...just would be real nice to have :)

I use the back dump bed a lot...always full of tools, etc when I go back into to woods. Also, my wife an DIL take too Ranger to local Saturday farmers market about 10 miles away. Legal to drive on the road edge/shoulder here in northern MN on certain roads.

Good luck...Tom R

If I wanted smaller footprint I would look at the Ranger 500...

I have a 2011 Ranger 800XP in camo as well. I have had the machine almost 11 months and I am very happy with it. I use it on the farm and hunting. It has done everything that I have asked of it so far and quite well I might add. I have added a windshield, top, winch and front hitch to it so far. I plan to add a reverse light soon. Just throwing out some accessory ideas for whatever machine that end up getting.

Good Luck,

I have a 2011 Polaris Ranger 500 EFI camo and really like it, I use it for lots of trail riding and work on my property in northern Minnesota hauling wood etc, the size of the machine makes it easy to get around on trails and is very comfortable with 2 peeps on the machine, plenty of power and 45 mph is fast enough for me, on demand 4 wheel drive is great but I usually am in one wheel drive and get 25 mpg so it's very inexpensive to cruise on, my wife loves going for rides in the evening and it is legal in Mn to drive on all roads except state hwy's and interstates.

We have three in the family.
1.2006 Yamaha 450 Rhino with 3300 miles.
A.Absolutely no problems ,used almost daily in my business
B.Excellent on fuel,unfortunately they don't make the 450 model
any more.Would buy a new one if needed in a heart beat.
2.2008 Kawasaki 750 Teryx
A.Very good machine,almost a copy of the Rhino,slightly bigger
B.Not the best on fuel, fit and finish very good.
3.2011 JD 825 Gator(brother-in-laws)
A.China built 3 cyl.motor(sounds like an out board boat motor)
B.Terrible on fuel
C.I just can't get over the looks(don't like)
4.All Cvt with no problems...my Kawasaki ATV had 3000 plus miles also with no problems.
5.I personally don't care for anything Polaris, they have always used Fuji engines and now moved to Mexico (700-800 twins are made in the US.)

We have a mechron and as you said-all work no play. It would be left in the dust on the trail--but you would be OK coming into camp late if you had 1100 lbs of firewood and beer!

Mechrons are tanks..

I should have reiterated in my earlier post when discussing the 825 I Gator about the fuel consumption, as Dan did in his later post. I have written about the high fuel consumption of the 3 cylinder Chery engine in this application in other posts, but suffice it to say it is thirsty. Combine that with a 5.3 gallon tank and one has limited range. This may be another one of those areas where Polaris has the "better ergonomics" but I like that the Ranger has a 9 gallon fuel tank (at least mine did). My Ranger 800, so long as I stayed out of the throttle a little, would burn only a tiny bit more fuel per hour than my prior JD 850d DIESEL and less than my father's carbureted 500 Ranger. For me, the increased low and mid range power of the 825 offsets this liability when comparing those two, but for those folks who take their machines deep into the woods for prolonged hunting excursions or may be working on large properties without easy fuel supply aside from that which one carries, this is certainly something to think about.

Just a quick update,I am still looking for the side x side that is the perfect fit for me. I kinda wish I hadn't gone to look at the Can-am Commander, I can't quit thinking about that thing.......Expensive...u betcha, practical.....not really, wicked cool....absolutely !!!
I have been back to the three dealers to refresh my opinions of the 4 models that I have narrowed my choice down to. The ranger xp 800 ,the ranger 500, Kawasaki teryx sport(green) and my personal favorite the Can-Am xt 800 commander.
