We had one dumped on a client's land last winter. The local forest ranger found some mail down in the upholstery.
The previous owner was surprised to find his was a "boomerang couch" and returned to him within 12 hours... accompanied with a summons.

He had driven over 40 miles to dump it!

Is it really that hard to dispose of something locally in your area, or was the guy just an idiot? I realize you didn't know the dumper personally, but just wondering if local regulations are causing that or just normal run of the mill stupidity. Our garbage collection will take one large item per bi-weekly collection day, otherwise the dump is no more expensive than the gas to drive 40 miles round trip for something as light as a couch.

Can't stand people dumping trash. When I was young we had a river camp that someone dumped a truckload of garbage under. My parents went through the trash and ID the dumpers. Took it back to their house cut bags and dumped it on the front of house. Upon leaving they destroyed the yard with truck. Typically people with the mentality to dump trash out in the "country" are not bright enough to remove mail and such.

My dad bought a few acres when I was a kid. It had a pretty big creek running through it back a ways from the road frontage. Apparently it had been used as a dump for several years at least.

I remember spending weekend after weekend working with my dad hauling crap out of the creek. Furniture, appliances, tires, and all manner of smaller trash.

We need litter bug snipers with standing authorization to shoot to maim. They could randomly stake out the usual dump spots.

Okay, a little extreme maybe. :D These people know better, they just won't take NO for an answer. The penalties are not severe enough and the enforcement is not a high priority in terms of the manpower dedicated to it.

Nay, you are too polite. :D They need to spend a few weeks cleaning up the crap that they and others have dumped over the years.

I honestly can't answer that question... my town transfer station accepts anything. Yet many towns are charging "disposal fees" for hard items such as couches and TVs, as well as white goods. Some are even chargeing a "per bag" fee for trash disposal.
The town "powers that be" deny that this leads to illegal dumping... even though said disposal fee can eat up the cost of a 30 pack, and gas enough to illegally dump on a back road.

Around here there is no free way to get rid of trash. So it gets dumped down every back road ravine. And TV's have a $20 hazardous waste disposal fee each and $3.00 per tire. I recycle all the beer bottles, cans and plastic bottles that people toss out their car windows. I generally fill up a grocery bag when I take the dog out for a walk on the road. Even so, it's improved a lot since I started cleaning up the road, because nothing attracts trash and the scum who dump it, like more trash. I have turned people in before when I've found evidence, but sadly there was none with any of the larger items that have been dumped here. My favorite was the guy who left his pay stub with his soc sec number on it in a bag of trash he dumped.

In addition to the road trash, when I bought my place there were 5 dumps on the property. Every ravine had a pile of trash in it. I'm down to the last and biggest dump. The former owners must have let neighbors dump in that one as well. Just as an example, there were 4 refrigerators up there, and all manner of other large appliances. At least the metal items can be turned in for cash at the salvage yard, but the garbage costs me per pickup load at the transfer station. I WILL have this place clean soon though, which is very satisfying. I just don't understand people who would dump stuff in such a beautiful place, the world certainly would be better off it they all went up in puff of greasy black smoke.

He said, "Kid, we found your name on an envelope at the bottom of a half a ton of garbage, and just wanted to know if you had any information about it." And I said, "Yes, sir, Officer Obie, I cannot tell a lie, I put that envelope under that garbage."

I used to be able to recite the whole song. lol

I wonder if the Massacree is as funny to kids now as those who grew up in the 60's? Or, maybe they see humor but not quite the same without the framework of the times. It was released in 1967; the year I made my final escape from high school. :D
