New Stihl MS 290

Congratulations on your new saw. I'm very fond of the MS290 having had one for a few years before selling it to a friend. It is running like new (actually better than new ;) ) I'd agree, that it is one of the best values in saws. A little heavy for the power, but a real good saw. Enjoy!

Make sure to change the air filter frequently. They aren't that big and the clog easily and really rob the power when clogged. They only cost a few bucks and don't blow out well with an air compressor. Also a proper pro chisel chain will make it cut much faster than the chain it was likely sold with.

Could I get one at TSC maybe?

Congrats on your new Stihl. I've owned my MS90 for three years now. Great saw. It's dropped many trees. I run a 20in bar with RSC chains. This link will show all the different chains Stihl offers.http://www.stihlusa.com/chainsaws/types.html

I have an MS 390 that is exactly the same saw as the 290 but with a larger bore engine. I have had it for 5 years and not a single problem. I have an 18" and 20" bars but the 20 never sees any use. I found that the 18" is an all around great length. I do wish I had a smaller saw for limbing tho. These puppies get heavy after a half a day.

Gain just over 20% faster cutting with a simple 30 minute muffler mod at no cost on the 290  and Carb re-tune.
If your saw came with 325 RMC chain and you switch it over to RSC chain you will cut another 50% faster in clean softwoods and clean hardwoods. If cutting dirty wood keep your RM chain.
