I have a tc29d with about 17hrs on it. I recently started hearing a "whine" when using the FEL that has worsened. I noticed that the "whine" is not as noticable when the clutch pedel is depressed and operating the FEL. This weekend when I went to back the tractor out to see if I could find the problem I had difficulty with getting a response in the third gear range, less so with 2, and normal operation in 1st. The tractor doesn't want to move anywhere in third, forward or backwards. The "whine" is now louder when using the FEL or with depressing the hydrostatic pedal forward or reverse directions. I am fairly mechanically inclined, but I am a newbee to the tractor world. I have been periodically scanning the boards and have been impressed with this site and am learning alot. Any helpful thoughts would be appreciated

Has it been real cold (10 degrees F or less)? Sometimes hydraulics will make a whine when the oil is real cold. If so, try heating the tractor up with a turbo heater or something, then try it again.

Did you contact the dealer and tell him what going in case the problem doesn't go away or increases, that way he will have a record.

I have had 33D for two years and recently experienced the same thing for the first time. Then I realized that it was the first time that I had my tractor out when it was below 20 degrees (no snow yet!!). Letting it warm up for a while or plugging the block heater in takes care of the cold oil. I normally keep mine in a heated garage, thus I had never experienced this before. It is scary.

Might have had a similar "problem" with my TC25D. Temperature related. The colder the day/night the louder the the hydro-whine(scream). Using a block heater x1-3hrs, idling @+1100 rpm until the temp gauge needle moves followed by lightly rocking the hydro pedal reduced the noise level(assuming pedal movement circulates the hydrofluid resulting in quicker warm-up). "Hydro-whine" back to normal sound when the tractor is at operating temp. Basically just be patient with cold weather starts. I've been using my block heater any day/night the temp is below +40F. Waste of electricity?

Listening to all this talk about the "whining" in HST transmissions and long warm-up times gives me the urge to run out and get some AMSOIL and change mine this weekend before I get any problems. Of course some of you are probably thinking "its about time" (MarkC /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif) and others are just shaking their heads in bewilderment at yet "another one of those radicals that wants to throw good money away" (won't name any names here /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif).

Dave, have you looked into NH's MC200 hydro fluid (vs the standard MC134)? It is either a synthetic or multi-visc, or maybe even both. I think I saw in my manual or someplace else it was recommended for colder operation.

Thankyou for the tips. It was cold for the week prior (low 20's). I spoke with my dealer who came out and lubed it up and said it was fine. Unfortunately, I wasn't home when he was there. When I went to put it in the unheated garage, the whine seemed a little better, but definitly still noticable when the clutch is not engaged and using the FEL. It also wouldn't move in 2 or 3. After reading your replies, I let it warm up a bit, and then it would move as it should. But the FEL still whined?? Is this expected? If temp is the problem, can I damage things if I don't wait long enough? I don't have a block heater, live in NE Ohio, is that something I should be getting. Thanks

djradz,

I did briefly ask my dealer about it but he said that based on my type of use that I should change the fluid back during the summer. Wasn't really interested in doing that hydro oil change twice a year. Based on what I have heard here about AMSOIL and my past indirect experience with AMSOIL products (my Dad used their products back in the 80's) I thought it might be worth a try.

As I'm writing this it is snowing outside. About 3 or 4 inches on the ground but its pretty warm, around 30 degrees. Not too cold for the tractor. Biggest concern is when it reaches 0 or lower. This winter has been so mild that its probably not an issue for this season but can never be sure...

In a word, YES. If you are working in cold weather, and don't have some other means of preheating, then a block heater is a wise investment. Preheating cuts down on the wear and tear of starting up dramatically. In extreme cold, starting may be very difficult without one. They aren't expensive, and you can probably install one yourself.

I'm suprised your dealer didn't recommend it when you bough the tractor. I used to live in NW Ohio, and can remember some nasty winters. It seems like every year we had a couple weeks of -10 or -20? temps (though I guess the recent winters haen't been as bad).
