RPM guides:
Running around the flat yard, with no place to go in a hurry - 1600-1800 rpm.
Time to get back to the house for lunch - 2200 rpm.
Climbing my 20% grade out back with the mower - 2400 rpm.
Showing that chlorophyll who's boss with the mower in thick grass - full throttle.
Getting the job done, in the sun, out at the farm - priceless.

Biggest mistakes of new HST owners:
Running too low RPM.
Trying to climb hills in higher gears rather than I-Low
Using the HST pedal as a gas pedal. The more you push it, the lower the torque to the wheels. Climbing hills will take rpms, low gear, and the smallest touch on the HST pedal.

Let us know how it works out for you. Wear hearing protectors, and soon that diesel whine, that seems too fast and high at first, will be music to your ears.

Just let up on that pedal and it will climb any hill. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have a new TC40DA and had exactly the same experience. You can read about it here . Amazingly, followed the advice and I couldn't believe the power. I had it figured out in a few minutes and love the HST /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Bebop, I've got a new TC24DA too and had the exact same problem...everything the guys above said is true. It's not like a car, where you can floor it and go faster. Put 'er in low gear with just a little pedal and she'll climb a mountain, so long as there's enough traction. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

DocHeb said it all better than anyone I've seen every say it. I've got a TC24 and a couple very steep hills. I'm amazed at how much power the tractor actually has! New tractor owners, especially those with HST transmissions often make a couple mistakes. The RPMs are often run way too low, these engines are designed to run all day every day at full PTO speed, and that is up near the very top of the RPM range, there is a governor on most of the little diesel engies to prevent running them too high. Another mistake is trying to climb hills in high range, they are not designed for that, the TC24 is only a 2 range machine, shift it into Low range. And as has been stated 1000+ times here on TBN the HST pedal is not like a car accelerator, but it is common to think of it as such. The HST pedal is really like a gear selector in a car. Barely touch it an you are in the equavalent of 1st gear, within the given range (High or Low) you will have the most torque available at this point. As you slow push down on the HST the torque (pulling power) decreases but the speed increases just as if you had shifted to 2nd, 3rd or 4th gear. Push it to the floor and you are in the equavalent of "overdrive" in a car, lots of speed but with minimal torque so only good when running on flat ground.

bebop86,
Something that I don't think any has mentioned, it could be a hydraulic quick disconnect that has come loose. When they do, it is amazing how sluggish a tractor will run. I would say to check all of them, it is sometimes had to tell if they are loose just by looking.

Hey Gary, you've claimed your 'dog won't hunt'. What's the scoop?

Gary,

I have been around tractors since I was 10. Now I am fifty almost and when I got my TC21D I had the same mistake most have. I think of the hydro pedal as a gas pedal and it is not. Now I have a TC29D and I have three ranges so it helps a bit having a mid range for an all around range. But your 24 I think only has two ranges so doing most of your yard work you have to be in the low range and the high should only be used on the road. And in low you should be able to do anything, just remember to let up on your pedal.
