New TC35DA with grille guard - hood won\'t open!

What did my dealer do to me? I just tried to open the hood on my new TC35DA and the grille guard brackets interfere with the bottom of the hood, making it impossible to open. (Yes, I did fold the guard down!)

The guard appears to be installed properly. I'm thinking it must be the wrong guard for this model. Does anyone know if there is a difference between guards for a TC35D/40D/45D and TC35DA/40DA/45DA? Maybe the hoods on the newer models are different enough to require a different bracket, or maybe the guard for an entirely different series. Any ideas?

I don't know about the TC 35 DA, but I had a similar problem when I ordered a grille guard for my TC 21 D I was about to install it but I held it up and determined that if I installed it you wouldn't be able to open the hood. It seems that it was made to fit the TC 21 DA, but not theTC 21 D. I assume your clearance problem is basically the same as mine was.

Any chance of a picture? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Here's the way the guard is mounted on a TC45D. I was installing a battery box and had the grill guard folded down. The only way I can imagine your dealer could have screwed it up is to only use two bolts on each side and slide the guard back so the front holes on the grill guard align with the rear holes on the tractor's mounting bracket. Here's a picture of me trying to open the hood, showing the interference with the guard brackets.

The correct part number for a TC35DA grille guard is 719849056. I don't know what I have, or if the TC35D part number is different.

The TC33 and TC35 use the same grill guard.
I have had this happen , all i had to do was loosen the bolts that hole the guard on to the frame and angle them slightly forward. there is usually a little play. I hope this helps. Some times if some one runs into something pretty hard it needs to be aligned again to clear hood.

Thanks for the suggestion - I tried it today. Loosened all the bolts, and while the brackets could move around quite a bit, they wouldn't come anywhere close to allowing the hood to open. I still think it must be the wrong guard. In addition to the bracket problem, the bars block the lights.

Chuck, there isn't much you can do about the guard blocking the lights, but I've looked at your pictures and mine a few times and I think they put the wrong mounting brackets into your kit. If you look at the front two bolts and then go straight up, your bracket starts to curve right above the forward bolts. On mine, the bracket is still flat and goes at least another 1/2" out before starting to curve up. I think that's just enough clearance to allow the hood to rotate up and open.

Drilling the holes out so they are elongated should not be done. If your guard slides backwards if you bump something, that's not much of a guard in my book. Now if there is enough room so the holes could be drilled 1/2" to 3/4" farther back, that might be an option, but that would be something I'd let the dealer do. Another option might be to take the brackets off and move them forward, just using the two rear mounting holes in the front holes of the tractor frame. That would move your guard out quite a bit. In that instance, you would want to make sure the guard clears the loader. If it does, you might wait and get your dealer to investigate and fix the problem when you take it in for the 50 hr check.

Now that I look closer, I see what you mean. My brackets do look shorter. I took the guard off (didn't have much choice if I wanted to open the hood) and will call the dealer to see if they have another guard in stock. If they do, I'll take mine back for comparison. If not, hopefully they will order one for me. Thanks for the help.

Traded my grille guard today for a new one - p/n 719849056. The brackets are about an inch longer than the one I had. According to the instructions the guard fits TC29DA, TC33DA, TC35A, TC35DA, TC40A, TC40DA, TC45A, TC45DA, and a bunch of Case IH models. I still have no idea what tractor the first guard was intended for. Maybe a TC48/55DA? The frame on those seems to extend further forward than mine. Anyway, hopefully this will take care of my problem.
