Bird, I've never used a gooseneck/fifth wheel type trailer, only the standard ball type for my 16' trailer. Is the gooseneck/fifth wheel really that much better?

Like the difference between day and night. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif With them, you don't need "sway control"; much more stable and comfortable driving. With a lot of utility trailers, you probably don't notice effects from the wind like you do with RVs (travel trailers), but with a conventional travel trailer, you definitely feel crosswinds, and when a truck or other large vehicle passes you, you definitely feel it. But you don't get that with a gooseneck/fifth wheel trailers. If you've never pulled one, you ought to try it sometime, you'll love it.

StanleyinMd: Bird is absolutely correct. It handles much better, even than a regular trailer with anti-sway bars, etc. In addition, the hook-up is much easier (at least for me). Backing up to center the receiver over the ball on a regular trailer has always been a hassle, while with the gooseneck you can visually see the gooseneck arm in relation to the ball and the 5th wheel is even easier.

About the only disadvantage is if you have to have a bunch of stuff in the bed at the same time you are towing. There is a type of hitch where to ball reverses into the bed and you also have the option of removing the ball and dropping in a 5th wheel into the ball's opening. This let's you use either the gooseneck or the 5th wheel, and, the bed is completely flat when not towing. The one I have is manufactured by B & W Co out of Humbolt, Kansas but I'm sure there must be others.

Almost every time, but ESPECIALLY when using the loader. Many tipover/rollover stories in the safety forum often involve loader usage. But it can happen just about anywhere - kind of like those "didn't see that coming?" TV commercials.

Mark

PS I hope you are as happy with your TC40D as I am with mine! Congrats!

Sure do, and been doing it so long, it just doesn't feel right to not have one on.

Thanks. I now have 7 hours on the tractor and am completely satisifed with my purchase. My original thoughts of an orange tractor are fading fast...

I've attached a recent picture with my new box blade after doing some dirt work.
