New to compact tractors

Thanks for the info, how is a sub frame backhoe for taking on and off is it a big project or is it relatively fast? I would probably be leaving it on most of the time but would need to remove it for tilling and other implements from time to time.

The John Deere's are very simple to remove: unplug 2 hydraulic lines, remove 2 pins and then set the backhoe on the ground. As mentioned above it takes more time to put the 3pt. hitch back on than to remove or attach the hoe.

Every tractor has its pro's and cons. The type of work you plan to be doing I would look at Deere's 4x20 series tractors, they will have the power to do what you want to do and are offered both in hydrostatic and power reverser transmissions. As far as longevity goes, the hydro and gear comparison would be close, I could see you replacing the clutch in a gear tractor before a hydro. There are other options as far as brands go, I also would check out the Kubota L5740 and MX5100. I don't know the model numbers in the other brands but here's a start.

My JD 3032E has the hydrostatic, love it. I've had one knee replacement & have been putting off the other one, and back surgery. It's so much easier than the manual shifting of my Yanmar.
