Anyone have experience with a John Deere 4000 series (any model) 4 x 4 with loader and backhoe? Thinking about in the 2500 hour range. New ones depreciate like a new car and I'll only be using it a few hundred hours per year.

Regards,

Bill.

Are you asking about the old 4000 (1998 to 2004 or 2005) or the new 4x20 series?
If the older machines (4200, 4300, 4400, 4210, 4310 and 4410), those are some solid tractors. If a backhoe is rigged to the tractor, make sure it's the subframe type and not the 3PH mount.

I have a 4400 with the sync-reverser transmission. I'm quite happy with it. IMHO, the 4x00 and 4x10 were some of the best compact tractors Deere ever marketed. There's a number of TBN members with these tractor, so search, using the model number.

Bill -

I have only had my JD 4600, with loader and backhoe, for a week. I'm quite happy with it so far. I think this machine is big enough to get some things done. That said, a bigger machine would do more of a job on stumping. My stumping is quite a heavy use for this machine. See photos and more comments in the following thread:

Good luck in your search!

I'd say exactly the opposite. The 4400 we had was the worst tractor, past or present, we have ever owned. Granted it was one of the early models, which had lots of known problems, I just don't think I could ever own one again. Even the two dealers we use said the 4x00 series tractors were not one of Deere's finer accomplishments. Lots of front axle problems, some rear axle problems, casting/housing problems, bad seals, etc, plenty of reading on TBN about it.

I have a JD4720 with 400CX loader and a Woods BH 90X frame mount BH. Dealer convinced me the Woods was superior to the Deere BH. I have been very happy with the combo and no problems.
