Thank you everyone for your replies. Thank you for the thread referals they really came in handy as I try to see what type of tractor would work for me.

Dmay, what I will be mainly using the tractor for and what is my main concern for the small farm is tilling, plowing land for soil preparation. Seeding, digging, and moving compost and other objects around the property. I will be removing trees with a chain saw if needed.

Now that Ive read the the posts in the other threads and reading your posts I have come to the conclusion that I will be needing a tractor with 35+ PTO HP if not more. What I am trying to think of which is the most important thing for this to be a reality is the cost of the tractor. How much would a tractor of 35+ PTO with a brush hog, loader, backhoe, tiller/plow and seeder cost me in total? I do not want to purchase an used old tractor but I would like to purchase a used tractor to save on the costs of a new one, but are there any advantages in purchasing new from a dealer exlcuding warranty, and financing? What do you think my initial cost would be for a used 2002-2009 tractor model with the implements?

I would appreciate suggestions on what model tractors(what brands/models are inexpensive for their quality and use?) and on the above.

Thank you again everyone for the help on my decision making.

Inexpensive for their quality, would be something like Mahindra, Kioti, LS, from what I've been reading here on TBN lately.

Have you checked craigslist for your area to see what might be out there?

Something to consider about tractors, they last longer and retain their value better than autos'. You can buy a good older tractor to handle the tillage and heavy work for alot less than the cost of a new one. A good used utility tractor of 50 to 75 hp and gear tranny might be the best bet for the plowing and tilling, and there are lots of Deeres, Fords, IH, and others available. Most of these are not as manueverable or as easy to operate in close quarters as a new compact but for field work these older tractors will get the job done alot faster.

Having an older utility tractor for field work and a newer small compact for the close quarters work might be a better way to go.

There's a 2008 Mahindra 2615 TLB on eBay now for $15K BIN.
A 2008 Kubota B26 TLB at $23K BIN.
A 2010 Kubota B26 TLB at $26.9K BIN.
A 2007 Kubota L48 TLB with trailer and 6ft Woods brush hog at $37.5K BIN.
A 2009 Kubota M59 TLB at $40.5K BIN.
A new Branson 2400 TLB at $20K BIN
A 2004 JD 4310 TLB at $19K BIN
A 2002 JD 4510 TLB at $20.5K BIN.

This gives an idea of what folks are asking for this type of hardware.

Good luck.

Diesel tractors have a long life if taken care of. Most will last to 10,000 hours. So if you can find a good used diesel tractor with under 5,000 hours for a decent price I would not be afraid to purchase it. However, that being said you have to know a good tractor from one that has been repainted to look good.:)

I've got a used Montana 4540 and loader, with 98 hours on it, in stock. It would make him good tractor to start with.
