Hello fellow tractor owner/enthusiasts- Thought I'd say hello and introduce myself on here. I've been using your forums as a resource over the past few years for various maintenance and troubleshooting needs. Thought I should finally take the time and register and become part of the community.
I grew up a small farm in SE Kentucky that borders Lake Cumberland. I'm about to graduate from the Ohio State University with an Industrial Engineering degree. My dad is almost 70 years old so I've been assisting him the past several years on the farm and a couple other smaller pieces of land we have/maintain. I had a small lawn mowing business back in high school and do most of the maintenance/upkeep on our equipment.
Back in 1973 my father purchased a brand new International 464 complete with bush hog, rear blade, and yard box for less than $4000. The hour meter broke in the mid 1990's with ~1050 hours on it, but the tractor still runs and works fine today. However, it is looking quite rough and would benefit from an overhaul and restoration.
I think I was a natural born Deere enthusiast, but for as long as I can remember my dad swore off never buying any John Deere because "they are way too dam expensive." Luckily after he borrowed our neighbor's JD 1050 for a few weeks during one summer, we bought John Deere 455 diesel in 1995 then a smaller GT275 in 1998.
The International 464 is getting more troublesome every year. My biggest complaint is the rear differential is broken and you cannot lock the rear wheels- this is especially bothersome because it only has 2wd and there are many steep hills/ruts on our farm where a differential lock/mfwd is crucial. The battery always drains, the hydraulic lines need replaced, it's difficult to shift in/out of low range, parking break needs replaced, and several other minor issues that just seem to aggravate me because I'm the one that has to fix them.
In the coming year or so, I'm hoping with a new job, me and/or my dad can buy a new JD 5000 series open cab tractor with mfwd. The new X748 garden tractor with 4wd is mighty fine also, but at 14k+ new, I think the 455 will last another 15-20 years with no problems.
Anyway, I look forward to sharing some of my advice on here as well as getting help and input from everyone else. This appears to be the best tractor forum on the internet.
