I would change out the light bulb, probably located behind the spindle, up under the head. That bottom switch probably activates it.

Iplayfarmer,

Thanks for the reply.

If you get a chance, can you explain how you adjust the belt for different RPMs and confirm the name and functions of the controls needed to do that. Are the screws with the tap on the right and left side called "bar knobs"? The one on the right side is rusted shut. The opposite one on the left side turns in and out freely. Can just having the left side moves good enough to loosening what ever I need to loosen to adjust the pulley or belts for RPM adjustments. The chromed handle next to the rusted "bar knob" moves, but I'm not sure how it should be moved. I believe this is called the "tension adjuster". Does it move the motor closer to the housing to loosen the belts on the pulleys? Pull or push towards the motor? Guess I just need to get back into the garage and play with that thing and see what moves what...but any help from your end would be appreciated.

Second question is regarding the two black colored switches on the left side. I'm guessing they are power switches. The one on top will turn on the motor. What is the function of the lower one?

I have a manual for a Jet Model JDP-17MF. It appears very similar to our machine and is using it to learn the nomenclature of the various parts of this machine. Do you have a source for the one we have or one more similar for me to learn the guts and function of this machine?

I also noticed you had disassembled your drill press to clean and be serviced. I'm in the process doing that this weekend. I'm going to check the electrical components.
Any advice on what specifically to look for or to check? The belts have a few nicks and cracks on them. What size will I need if they are to be replaced?

I'm excited to refurbish this machine and start in on some drilling practices (homework for my machinist classes).

Thanks again for reviving this thread.

Hi David,

Will look for the light. The top rocker switch is marked with an embossed "M" and the lower rocker switch is marked with "L". So can I guess, M is for motor, and L is for light? Thanks...

Let us know if that is the answer...

Yep! Pays to do a 360 look around your machine from top and bottom view....found the bulb socket. The switches are marked for the functions. "M" for motor and "L" for light. Still working on getting it cleaned and adjusted.

I also got the rusted screw loosened and the pulley torsion handle to move the motor. The motor was resting on two rusted bolts...now cleaned and loosened. Everything is moving freely now. Took some prompting from you folks. Thanks for getting me oriented. Learning more each day.

Anyone know the wiring schematic? The two wires to the light socket were detached.

send power to the light socket from the normally 'cold' side or the neutral wire of the M switch so that when you turn on the press the light comes on or

wire the socket on its own but I would forever forget and leave the light on myself

I had the exact same drill press for many years and finally gave it to a buddy. I replaced my original chuck with a Jacobs because the factory one was not centered and let the drill wobble. Also, it would not hold a drill from slipping under high torque.

You can get a Vice-Grip style clamp for the table at HF that has a bolt on one side for mounting through the table. Very handy for clamping a piece to the table and drilling through the center hole. HF also has reasonably well made drill press vices. Then just devote an oil can, with some Mobile 1 in it, for use when drilling and keep a scrap of wood handy to rest your work on so you don't drill the table. All set.

Best way to tighten the belts is with a very large screwdriver. Stick it in between the motor bracket and the casting, where the bracket slides out to tighten the belt. The factory handle doesn't have the leverage to really tighten the belts for heavy, low speed torque.

These are not exceptionally powerful units, but they will do just about anything you need if worked carefully with very tight belts. If you start drilling stainless steel or using large hole saws, you'll find the limit, but I did a lot of projects with mine. Stainless takes a lot of pressure at low speed and must make a continuous curl off the drill. Very power hungry.

My father had a similar press with pretty much the same motor. Rated with the same HP. He decided to install an old 1/4 HP motor on his from an earlier life as a swamp cooler motor. It came with a four speed switch that made speed changes as easy as pushing a button. It turned out that that motor (1/4 HP) had more power than the original 1/2 HP motor on the drill press.

For the chuck key, I pressed a piece of automotive vacuum hose onto one side of the chuck key T handle. About 2 feet long. And tied the other end back by the motor. It was always hanging right there within reach.

I'm sure you'll enjoy yours.

You guys have some cool drill press', one of mine is pretty good too, it's a Solberga made in Sweden,

It's all gear drive, you shift the gears with two levers on the side. Here's the speeds,

I pretty much only use it when I have a tough drilling project,

Anyway, a good drill press is a GREAT tool to own!
