Put a rounded drain plug in it. They are impossible to remove.

Hang on, Pallets were never offered as a solution or explanation for the "deep,deep skinny hole", they were strongly suggested as a safety measure to cover & mark the position of the "deep, deep skinny hole".

If placing two pallets in an inverted 'V' over the "deep, deep skinny hole" results in furthering the continuing investigation into the mystery of the "Pallets in Fields" conundrum, the all the better!
