new to me torches, how do they look?

Cylinder leases aren't transferable but the smaller sizes of cylinders can often be purchased. Call the local welding supply before going in to check. Keep the name and number of the person you bought the cylinders from.

I bought a set of torches about 18 years ago with the leased tanks. This was a private individual to private individual sale. Rather than turn in his near full tanks the person who sold me the torches said to take the tanks. He then signed his lease paperwork over to me and told me to stop at the tank company and transfer it into my name. I did so the following week and they transferred his tank lease into my name and sent me the renewal when it came due. I have since changed companies who I lease my tanks from.

If he had a copy of his lease and signed it over is a little different. Also helps if the welding supply knows him pretty well. You still had to have an account set up in your name though. I've seen it a couple times where someone comes in with cylinders and says to put it on so and so's account because they don't have their own. Then you look on so and so's account and he doesn't even have the same size cylinders leased. Then it gets interesting when you have to ask where the cylinders came from?

Yes, he signed his lease over to me. I did have to open an account (Just my info added into their system) and they transferred the remainder of his lease to me. He had been a customer for almost 20 years so they knew who he was.

Around here those smaller bottles can be exchanged for full ones at most farms stores and LWS. You do have to sign a form declaring that you own the tanks.

The welding supply must have known him pretty well to give you a deal. They weren't obligated to but he could have cancelled his lease and maybe? got a refund for the amount of time left on the lease. Leases are usually paid in advance but it still most likely depends on how the lease is written. There may be clause of no refunds or no refunds after so many month's. Good on the welding supply to not require you to pay a whole years lease.

Where I work has a policy that even with a new lease, you have to put a deposit on the cylinders because the odd cylinder went missing and the customer disappeared too. Kind of a stupid policy for getting rig welders to open an account. The whole idea of doing a credit app. is to make sure the customer has a good track record. I wouldn't want to put a $750.00 deposit($250/cyl) for 3 cylinders and still have to do a credit app. It's like being accused before you committed the crime. I think the odd cylinder going missing is just a cost of doing business. If the customer has a good payment record, they can get the deposit back after 2 years but there's no interest. That's a chunk of money to hand out, especially for guys just starting out and for sure it turns away potential customers. Also, there's some customers that may have had cylinders for a while and completely forgot about the deposit when they cancelled their lease. I don't think the management is too keen on keeping track and making sure the customer gets their deposit back. A cash cow in a lot of cases.

When I moved from Texas to Oklahoma, I brought my tanks with me. I didn't have any papers, having bought them from a neighbor. When I took them to get filled, they wouldn't do it. But, they did give me a 10 year lease on another set of tanks, in exchange for the tanks. If you're not willing to do something like that, you can probably have them hydro'd. I'd guess that it will be about 50 dollars (from my scuba diving days), but I don't know for sure.

Thanks guys, sorry its taking me so long to reply I have been really busy with work. We have had a really wet spring and I work construction. I had the tanks exchanged without any problems or questions. The torch is Harris I search for Harris tips and looked at a picture, thanks for the advice. The valves are harbor freight for sure but they seem to get alright reviews, I will have to look for a better set in the future. The line are dry rotted so I am going to get a set of lines what size would you guys recommend for a hobby welder fabricator. Thanks again.

Watch your local flea markets. I have 2 sets of hoses now. First set is new but only about 15' or so I don't use it much. 2nd hose was 50' but hoses were dry rotted and cracked so I cut it up and tossed it. Then I found a new 50' set at a flea market for about $23.00. They are 1/4" x 50'. Looks the same that HF sells for $39.00. If you can't wait the HF hose will work fine.
