Tractor
Yanmar YM2210D
Hey guys,

I picked up a YM2210D that needs a little work. It runs like a champ and even operates without any issues. I did a walk around with my iPhone camera and snapped pics of a few things I need help on.

I suspect the hood is not original to this tractor. The model doesn't match what is engraved on the side of the bell housing.

Trying to get to 3 posts so I can insert links to images and videos.

The previous owner spilled diesel fuel and now it's caked on. What's the best thing to use to get it off without harming anything?

I bought the owner's manual from Hoye. Besides that, what is your recommendation after picking up an old used tractor(albeit a Yanmar 2210D :cool2:)

This image is from 2015. The tractor has been abused considerably since the picture was taken.

If you don't mind, take a look at this video. Let me know your thoughts when you see things that need immediate attention. I'm not a mechanic by any means but I do like to tinker. I'd like to clean it. Especially under the fuel tank where it appears the previous owner spilled fuel and never cleaned it up. I'd also like to clean around the front hub to see how bad the seals are leaking. What's the best thing to use so I don't harm the seal? Once I resolve all of the issues with it, then I'll work on improving the appearance.

Curious what this knob operates and this lever. I'm sure it's in the owner's manual that I haven't read yet...:D

Trying to isolate the play in the steering linkage. This is where the steering shaft goes down through the body. See how loose it is.

Welcome to the Yanmar Nation !

The companion Service and Parts Manuals (also available from Hoye) are IMHO invaluable and well-worth the price in the long run. You'll find the exhaustive assembly blow-up diagrams in the parts manual incredibly useful.

.... I'd like to clean it. ....
  • Low-pressure water and fairly strong Simple Green solution with a stiff-(plastic) bristle brush will do wonders; any aerosol foam-on degreaser may help in a few spots like those caked-up front axles.
  • After you do the washing / degreasing, a complete fluids and filters change (cleaning of the screen filter in the tranny if that model has such) to establish a good 'clean baseline'. On the tranny you may find 3 drain points: rear screen filter, pan drain, and don't miss the lowest one at the point where the front-driveshaft connects, that one may be holding water.
  • Don't be too surprised to find water in the tranny fluid entered via that cracked shifter boot - replacing that to prevent further contaminant intrusion to the tranny might be a sooner-than-later priority.
  • After running awhile on fresh fluids and filters, check everything again (hot) to see if there's another load of contaminants in your fresh fluids and change again if indicated.
  • I'd do a complete drain and flush of the fuel tank, just to ensure good clean fuel as a baseline.
  • Doesn't look 'terminal' but FYI you can eliminate that kink in the fuel line between the filter and the injector pump by rotating the banjo on the injector pump 180* (facing forward) and installing a longer line there in a gentle loop over the top of the pump. Yes, you'll need to bleed the system after doing that.
  • Obvious in your walk-around video - missing brake rod, missing front driveshaft cover, missing mower PTO cover (latter mainly an entanglement / safety concern); a few fluid 'weeps' but after cleaning and fluid changes you'll be able to track those and likely find many are just a matter of fastener re-tightening.
  • The knob in video 2 is your 3 point hitch lock valve - make sure it's in the full-open position and then read about it in your operators manual.
  • IMHO the first step for that steering box cover in video 3 is simply 'tighten it home' (the retaining bolts, NOT the center steering gear adjuster). From there, see that service manual yer gonna get for steering system checks and gear-box adjustment procedure.
Hoye will quickly become a valued friend .... don't hesitate to use the great ticket based email system, to enquire about stuff like 'do you have used parts to repair my missing driveshaft cover' with pics attached showing what you've got now. I think you'll find them very responsive and helpful. Yes, building 'wish lists' and then placing larger orders will help reduce shipping costs immensely.

BTW, figuring out exactly what you've got vs what's missing/needed in relation to that front driveshaft cover is an example of when those Parts Manual blow-up diagrams will be invaluable ;-)

All just quick IMHO from the 'quick tour videos', enjoy your 'new' tractor!

PS, maybe others can see 'em, I had to use edit to pull the URL's for your vids and copy to my browser:

That tractor has been submerged underwater. There's no other explanation for rust everywhere, particularly on the underside of the seat. Especially when the appearance has degraded so much since the seller's 2015 photo. So flush out everything to get the mud out before running it.

The dangling warning lights reminded me that my YM240 had similar neglect when I bought it. I spent a month finding used original parts to get it restored back to stock condition. Then it has served me 15 years with no further problems. You should have a solid tractor after you finish renovation.

That tractor has been very abused from what it once was.
Seeing the shifter boot split ,I would check , and or drain the transmission fluid and check the filter . I would also make sure the cooling system, radiator was in good working order as well. Check, and or change the oil as well.

With all the warning lights disconnected, You will never know if it runs hot until it's too late

Bad looks won't destroy it. Bad fluids and a non working cooling system will !

TX mower, thank you for the thorough response. That is exactly the kind of feedback I am looking for. Hoye is going to be a life saver for me.

California, I believe the tractor has been sitting out in the weather for the past 18 months. It doesn't take long here in Florida to destroy equipment left out in the elements.

kenmac, You guys are right. I'm going to do a full fluid/filter swap. The radiator concerns me too. A lot of the fins are bent and I'll bet it's been running with straight water. The inside of the radiator overflow shouldn't have dried up rust inside of it.

I'm surprised the tractor is running as good as it does. That's a testament to the durability of these little tractors.

Tx was right on on all his things. Just from reading i was going to me tion the knob, he was right. I will say leave it all the way open always unless your serviceing 3pt and want it up. It can tear up your pump, its not a lowering speed control like some think, thats on the valve.

I agree not necessarily under water. This is the south, the sun, rain and humodity will ruin anything left out. California is from , well as the name leads you to think....California. now i know he is coastal and. Aybe they have sinilar humidity but for some reason i didnt think they had it?

Oh i also ment to mention the steering. Just tighten thoe bolts, them working loose is a common problem. Make sure the box is full of fluid too, fill theough steering wheel or shaft, i cant remember now? Dont want water if it was submerged.

Hey guys, I just wanted to let everyone know that I have not made any progress on this tractor yet. Hunting season is in full swing and I'm about to head to SW TX for two weeks. I'll begin work on the tractor mid December. Thanks for all the info so far.
