We're doing a project at work. We rented a roller and a plate compactor yesterday for $150 for the set.
It's worth it to get the roller.

A good dump truck driver could spread that material as he dumped in about 30 seconds, saving a bunch of time with the skid steer. I have never been able to justify picking up material myself for what they charge to haul and spread. Unless you just want the seat time, ask around to see what the haul charge is. I get rock from a quarry 36 miles away hauled in for 9.00 a ton.

Another thing you can do with having the truck deliver the rock is have him drive forward and back a few times with the load. Talk about compaction, 16 tons on 10 tires presses it down pretty good. Slip him 20 bucks when he gets there and you'll be able to save on the compactor rental.

Thanks for all the replies guys! One more question...well, maybe two. Do I need to compact both layers (1.5 inch base and then the recycled concrete on top) or can I spread the first layer, compact as best I can with a truck and rent a roller for the final layer?

I'd suggest you actually rent the roller for the first layer. Then put the crushed on top. I think that if the bottom is well compacted, the top won't need it.
