Could be the second stage of the clutch is bad. I'm told it happens.
I'm not sure exactly how the first/second stage clutch all goes together so I'm not much help.

My pto creeps as well. Just oil swishing around in the case.

Brakes are easy repair. $45 per shoe but easy.

Just take the cover bolts off and slide the whole mess out.

The shoes have two settings in the cover/mount. The "dead" side of the shoe mount is thicker turned one way than the other. Rotate to thicker face and rotate shoe to the less worn side of lining. Gets max life out of the shoes that way. Clear as mud? HTH

The brakes makes sense, but the PTO not working on this machine is beyond me. The brakes are sticking - they work, but the pedals don't want to reset on their own, I have to pull them back up with my toe. Must be a spring gone. The left brake works much better, and almost comes back to the proper pedal position when not depressed.

Dropped the machine at the JD dealer today to see if they can figure it out. I know they can, and hope it doesn't take too long at their hourly rate. They are going to take care of the brake pedal issue, and the two hydrolic leaks. One is merely two copper washers that need to be replaced. I should have an idea in the morning, as they washed it, and started stripping the 3 Pt hitch while I perused the goodies on the lot. Lots of shiny green things there I "need", lol.

Good to see you have your priorities straight DH. A lot of people look at all that fun stuff and only think they "want" it!

Hope all works out well with your tractor.

Oh, I know I want it, but there are a few I need. A bushhog, new disk, I like that little frontier food plot platner, a tiller.... ;)

Ha, I know exactly how ya feel. All the stuff at the delear looks so tempting. First order of business for me is saving up for a trailer.

Looks like a $7-800 repair that includes, a new PTO gear (teeth worn off), new return springs in brakes, hydraulic oil dropped/filters changed, new seals and gaskets in rock arms, and new washers/seals at hydraulic pump. She should operate fine, and have no leaks on return later this week.

Next will be a complete re-wire of the electrical system, new lights as needed, etc. My cousin has decided to upgrade to an MX-5 cutter, so I now have dibs on his older JD cutter.

I reckon I'll have to "borrow" the disk from the farm until I can get one to stay at the house, although I am debating buying a 5' tiller for the garden, small field (about 4 acres), and plots at home. I have a sandy loam at home, so the tiller should run fine, without the need to bottom plow.

I still need to find some suitcase weights for the front, as our current disks are a bit heavy.

Well, that's a swift kick in the wallet...! But, $7-800 is less than I was figurin' you'd get away with --- I was guessin' likely double with a new clutch and pressure plate (might as well throw in the PP if the clutch is new).

But, I guess that the clutch was OK?!? Or 2nd stage just stuck and that's how the PTO gears got stripped..?

Anyways, that 'ol tractor will do you a great job on that diskin' and tillin', too.
Should have enuf horses to run that mower without hardly breakin' a black puff...

Thanks for the update. Best of luck with your upcomin' projects, too.

If I may but in - new here - as the subject was touched on - brakes.
Mine also does not return the left peddle and has to be pulled back.
And the brakes leave much to be desired - I live in a very hilly region.
Neighbor is willing to help bur need a manual/schematic of the brakes. Where may I find a free down load siter - if it exists?
Can't order parts unless i know what I need.
