Re: 4 x 4 Binding

...who would be idiot enough to be in four wheel drive on dry pavement? ME! Not very often, to be sure, but the last time I used 4WD, I drove back into the shop and parked the tractor and had forgotten to take it out of 4WD.

Re: 4 x 4 Binding

The only two times I've ever done that on my truck, it tried to throw me out of the cab. Literally. It's got a very violent temper. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: 4 x 4 Binding

Wen,

I had to sell the Jeep, the GMC truck replaced it and didn't want both payments at the same time.

Why do you say smart move, don't you like yours? Mine was only about 3 years old when I sold it, bought it used with about 5,500 miles on it and loved it, great ride! A co-worker of mine rode in it once and thought it rode as well as his Olds 98! It's one of the few vehicles that I've owned that I miss. It was my first vehicle with anti-lock brakes, and that 4.0 liter straight six is full of torque!

Re: 4 x 4 Binding

Especially if you have one of these idiot designed (or not designed for idiots?) Chevy trucks 96-99. Push button 4WD with a 4WD light that is obscured by steering wheel instead of being front and center above speedo or tach where it should be! Everytime I use the dang thing I tie a piece of rope on the steering wheel to remind me it 's in 4WD. If you aren't turning sharp it doesn't feel much different in 4HIGH.

Wish my tractors had center differential! Every 4WD should have one, with a Lock Up ability.

Bird,

I drive in and out of my pole barn in 4x4 all the time! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Oh yea, by the way...sand floor, haven't poured concrete yet! I'll have to report back on the binding after I drive into the barn in 4x4 onto concrete, which surely will happen! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

My Ford/New Holland 2120 is so hard to get out of 4WD that I don't bother anymore. Part of the problem is that like the gear shift, New Holland put so many different bends in it to get around things (steering column etc.), that you are not putting a direct leveraged pressure at the pivot point. It is also stiff on just about all tractors I have ever tried, but must admit I have never tried the mini tractors like the 18 hp you have. Perhaps once you load it up with a loader and really make those front wheels dig in which is what happens with a loader because of the extra weight, you to can experience the 4WD stiff shift.

Re: 4 x 4 Binding

Jim, I agree. I bought one of those Cherokees for my wife 2 years ago (with part time 4wd). It's not a truck but it's the best family car I've ever owned. No rattles, squeaks or anything else, and the gutsiest 6 cylinder I've ever driven. That said, I still drive my old truck.

My L4310HST was relatively hard to get out of 4wd when I first got it. Then, when I replaced the rear tires with radials, it got worse (1" more rolling circumference). Then, when I replaced all four tires with the Michelin radials, it became very easy all of a sudden. The reason: The tires are almost perfectly matched now - I have .3% lead.

So, in most cases, it's the lead/lag that makes it hard. If NH uses a weird linkage, that certainly won't help, but try raising the front end off the ground with the bucket, then taking it out. If it's easy, lead/lag is the culprit. Guaranteed.
