So 2000 and 4000 are at least assembled in Georgia -- how about the 790/990? Does anyone know?

Sometimes I marvel at my sentiment to buy something made here, in this day and age, but I know I must not be the only one. I have spoken to some senior management people at Kubota, and on more than one occasion, when referring to the number of assembly plants Kubota now has here, in California and Georgia, they have said "You might consider us more American than John Deere now."

Now clearly they wouldn't have said as such if they didn't think it would matter.

While it's nice that the assembly is performed with US labor, the end profits generated go home with Kubota.

I still try to buy US produced when I can, even if it's a bag of carrots. (Although I'm aware that I'm fighting a losing battle) /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I believe the 2210 is built in Japan. I know the 4015 is. The 790 and 990 are still built in Japan by Yanmar. They are decendents of the original 50 series compacts that Deere started with, the 650 through 1050. They were updated with the 70 series. For a while if you wanted a HST Deere compact you had the 55 series, 655 through 955. When the 4000 series tractors were introduced, the 55's were dropped as well as the 70's. The 770 and 970 became the 790 and 990.

The 790 is a great tractor and I love mine.Be honest with yourself about gear vs hydro and if you lean more towards hydro I would go with the 4115,it will work hard for you and hold up well.It doesn't seem like you will have alot of heavy bushhog work around there. I would skip the 2210, too many people I know have bought a sub compact and still ened up with a tractor payment and not enough tractor. As far as the low specs on the 790, unless you want to do some very heavy lifting with the FEL it should be a non-issue. I can handle a full load of rock dust or sand with no trouble. If your going to use your lawn tractor to mow around the house, Im not sure I would go with a MMM, you give up ground clearance and add money. Maybe your needs require it though?

I just noticed you are local, you are welcome to come by and try out the 790 in working conditions, just pm me. If you are interested in a used machine, a friend recently traded a 4100 ? to a local dealer in Powhatan Va. and it only had 167 hrs.

Whats left to assemble in GA when they arrive from Japan competely assembled? Oil and fuel ? The 2210 -4115 are built by Yanmar under Deere specs. They are made in Japan
look at the stamp on the frame and engine.....

I bet those who dislike Japanese products have something Japanese sitting in their house - Like a T.V or Car maybe ??

Funny stuff /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It is not an issue of disliking things made in Japan. And I have tremendous respect for Kubota -- great machines, great brand, and they pioneered the subcompact machine class.

I have no problem with my TV or coffeemaker being made in the far east. The issue is something as iconic as a John Deere. All American brand, and not many companies can trace their roots to before the civil war.

In any case, I'm leaning toward the 790. I appreciate all the thoughts from the panel in this column.

Things I didn't like about the 790:

It was light. It has lots of HP but the weight to HP ratio is not good. You'll end up adding weight to the tractor but I think I'd rather see more weight in the overall frame (I think it denotes a stronger frame).

Weak rear hydraulics. They were half what the competitors equivalents were offering.

If you must go green then I would look at the 4000 series.

If you are leaning towards the 790, you are going to be happy. I have found that my 790 does all I ask of it. Are the loader specs not as good as some other (similar sized) tractors, yes, so far that has not posed a problem. I have been able to lift a full bucket of sand, dirt, gravel and even concrete.

While it would be nice to have greater lifting capacity, so far It would not have made any difference in the work I have been doing.

I have found that horsepower wise the tractor has more power than weight, in other words you won't bog it down it will just lose traction, if this will be a problem for the work you have in mind, you might look at getting the tires filled, or wheel weights.

I have a the 419 loader, a 5' box blade, 5' bush hog, harrow rake and a post hole digger, the tractor works well with all. I am currently in the process of building a barn and recently got the fork lift attachment for the loader, it was expensive but has really come in handy with the construction.

The only problem I have experienced is a leaking battery, the dealer replaced all of the effected parts and put in a new battery, under warranty, problem solved. I don't know if Deere has started using a new (better) battery or not, you should watch it closely though.

The other big discussion concerning the 790 is the gear tranny, I am ok with that, actually I am in the small minority on TBN that likes it. You should work both and see how you feel.

Best of luck with your decision, and remember to post pictures. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

All the JD's in this class have Yanmar engines that are built in Japan. Most of theese units are assembled in GA just like the orange ones. If you are going larger than the 2210 then I would not go smaller than the 4110. The 4010 is essentially a 2210 with better hydraulics and more features. The 4010 is still a two piece garden tractor frame VS the one piece frome of the 4110, 4115 and the 790. I prefer the 4115 or 4110 over the others. Not much price difference over the long haul. Theres nothing worse than spending the next ten years wishing you would have bought one model bigger. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
