Hi,

got my new tractor, and I have some heavy pitting on the hydraulic lines. I noticed that the older tractors it is a smooth oxidation not pitting. I think where it was parked must have got a good shot of salt.
Do you think this will cause problems in the future?

Hard to say long term but I would think some metal polish would take it off. "Eagle One Never Dull Wadding Polish" that I have I think would work. I would certainly try to remove it before it gets worse.

Good luck

If it's brand new, I wouldn't take delivery of it!

Is that brand new or is it new to you? Must be the latter. I'd pressre wash it really good. It must have been operating somewhere in a marine environment, in a salt mine, or possibly with a a highway or road department to have that much pitting.

Of course the pits will affect the fatigue life of the tube but whether that's a five year problem or a 20 year problem is anyone's guess.

I would wash it very well and remove those clamps to wash underneath them as well. Take some 000 steel wool to it I would then clear coat them with a couple coats of spray paint. I don't think you will have any problems with it down the road if you treat them properly now. I think at this point it is more cosmetic than anything.

My local NH dealer has a brand new tractor that has sat out now for approx 1 1/2-2 years now and it is rusting all over and the black dashboard plastic is faded that dull gray. Going to have to sell it cheap now to get rid of it.

Mine sat right next to a main road, all winter. It had some of that kind of corrosion.

I sprayed it all with a light weight oil, and it has been fine for the last 6 years. Steel wool will remove it, but it will also remove a lot of the coating that is protecting the lines.

Thanks for the replies,

The dealer is coming out to replace the lines. I did not even think there might be coating on them. Does anyone know what the lines are made of. I know with aluminum you only want to use the green scotch pads.
