How in the heck did the fuel filter cover get loose?

Mine is generally a complete bugger to remove. Sliced open the palm of my hand removing that cover once.

There are specialized wrenches that help tighten and remove the stock fuel filter cover. Unfortunately the last set of fuel filters I bought from my JD dealer came with the cover integrated into the fuel filter. This is a waste of money but I did not catch what they did until too late. Worse, the wrench for the stock fuel filter cover does not work! :D

Back to using the big channel locks I used before getting the wrench.

Ha Ha! That's what I use! I once did not get a good seal (didn't clean it well enough or something) and a fine stream of diesel will coat the under side of the hood in a hurry! BTW, I've gone through numerous clutch pedal/master cylinder bushings. First one I bought was $5.00 last one I bought was $10! Yes, my slave cylinder went out before the clutch as well.

DUH! Now I figured out what you did. Or forgot to do! :D

The fuel filter has two gaskets. One sits on top of the fuel filter housing and it's cross section is triangular in shape. The other has a round cross section and fits over the filter cartridge.

I bet what you did is either forget to put on the gasket that sits on the top of the housing....

OR put it on and forgot to take off the old gasket. The old gasket can sometimes stick on the filter lid.

In my Chevy I went through two hydraulic clutches. The clutch would go to the floor and it was time to call a wrecker. After the four wrecker calls, two for the clutch, one for the tranny and one for the engine relay I sold the truck. :D

When the Ford's hydraulic clutch went I was at least able to pop it back off the floor and get home.:D

The new fuel filters (from jippo sources, not ford or IH) that come attached to the lid use a flat cut gasket and NOT the OEM style triangle gasket. The flat gaskets leak. Do yourself a favor and return them, also do not throw away your old lid. You'll need it when you start buying the proper filters again.

The ones I got, ordered a year or so ago, have the triangular gasket. Next time I order I will make sure I get the old style aka cheaper filters. :D The original filter lid is in a zip lock back under the rear seat. My filter wrench fits that lid. They have new parts people at the JD dealer and maybe new software. In the past they had always sent the right stuff. This time it was not wrong but not right but it works. Next order I will have to be more careful.

I am pretty sure the filters I got where Fleetguard. I bought them from my JD dealer. Yep, Fleetguard fuel filters for my Ford truck from the JD dealer. Cracks me up but they get me the stuff cheaper and faster than the Autozone type of places.

I made a visit to the JD dealer to get a bucket of JD 0Wx40 oil for the truck and tractor. The oil was a bit more expensive than the last bucket but not much more than Shell 5Wx40 oil. The oil filter had gone up a bit too. Not sure what the oil filters are costing anymore. It is a JD branded filter for the Ford. I think made by the same company, Fleetguard?. It sure looks and feels just like the Motor Craft and Fleetguard filters I have bought.

Enjoy!
Frank,
Yes you need to add a dump truck to your equipment collection. Let's see, excavator, bull dozer ... How many tractors?

I thought I was going to get me a new truck too, but still waiting. Friend has a '03 F350 with the 7.3 and started talking about a new truck. I told him I wanted a shot at his old one before he sold/traded it in. He agreed, so when he bought the '11, I got out my checkbook only to find out his wife wanted him to keep the old one to beat around in, instead of messing up the new truck. He told me I might have to come by while she was at work and be gone with it before she got home. Her reply to that was if that truck wasn't in the driveway when she got home, he better be in it. Still hoping for it when the new wears off the latest purchase.
