Scruffy -

Heck, we might find that everybody has one of these things. Like MarkC, we've always called it a "pry bar" in my family. I use it so often around the property that I'm working on a holder for it on my tractor.

Just to be sure we're on the same page, can you tell if it's something like the one I'm using in this picture?

Harv

The guys that I work with call it a Pinch Bar. It’s used to move machinery around. They have them at Home Depot. Have to check the name they use next time I’m there.

Harv,
Up here in the northeast we call a pinch bar a crow bar and I'm not sure how the name came about.
What you were useing in your picture to pry the rock known as a iron bar,and
its a common tool for outside work around these parts.

I've got two of these bars, one about 6ft and pointed on one end and flat on the other end. And the other one that is about 5ft and has a curve on one end and flat for pry work. My grandfather gave me these, and called the tall one a "Johnson bar". It was from our basket factory and they had a bunch of them. I think "johnson" was the guy they always set to go get the bar! But thats just a guess. I have heard others around here call it that, so maybe its a local thing.

I've heard them referred to as Johnson Bars as well. I've also seen a long wooden handled contraption with steel wheels and a metal lip called a Johnson Bar. Used to pry up heavy machinery.

I bought my 6' "tamping bar" at Tractor Supply. It has the flat blade on one end and a round tamping head on the other. It gets used as a pry bar sometimes, but the old hex shaped bars the other guys are talking about are more resistant to bending than mine.

I apologize for getting everybody off the topic of dealers and onto the topic of crowbars. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Nevertheless, I have to say that, personally, I find the subject of crowbars more interesting. And a lot less antagonistic. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

The "pry bar" I have is really a tamping bar - it has a point on one end and a mushroom head at the other. If anyone finds a source of the old style tough kind with a flat end (or even a genuine old one), I'd sure like to know about it. I'd like to have it to move rocks with. I only need one, but I'd gladly take two...

To add to the list of names, I have always heard them called rock bars in my area. Fence builders use them to chip/pry on the rocks that are always in any post hole I dig.

BobT, we used this old bar for peeling bark off of cedar logs to split for fence posts. It was also used digging fence post holes (breaking rock up that ALWAYS was right where you dug).
Harv, THAT's the bar! How'd you get my bar?
I always thought it would be easy to take a chunk of hex drill rod and make a bar like this, and or make a 'tampin' bar. Definately stronger than what you can buy down at Home Despot (depot) or such places.
I've layed mine cross wise between two trees and hooked a home made winch (2 pc jeep rim on right front of jeep with cable wrapped around it) to yard my jeep out of the mire in a creek bed...had the left rear wheel hanging over a 6 foot drop off. Work great, never even put a tweek in the bar.
