New well, 10gpm enough?

Please forgive me.. I've been in the groundwater bidness so long I just assume everyone has the equipment to measure water levels...

There is another well on our property. It went low and a new one(current well) was put in before we bought here.

How can I find out if the old well is any good now? We have lived here 14 years; it has been sitting there capped the whole time.

Our existing well originally hydro'd at 14gpm, and is 450'. When we had the pump replaced a year or two ago, they sounded it, and set the new pump at 425'.

I have no idea how deep the old well is.

We thought at one time, if the old well recovered, maybe we could use one for the houses, and one for irrigation.

Anouther thing to consider.... If you install a pump that is larger than you need you will waste electricity. Motors use a lot of electricity when they start.

It may be better to install the smaller pump with a large tank, espically if you are planning on running them on a generator in case of emergency.

Yes, I know with constant use, like sprinklers, you can deplete the supply. But you can allways install more zones.

Just something to think about.
