CurleyDave,

You post is the best way to look at well/water usage that I have ever heard/read. :D Our septic field is sized for a four bedroom house as well. Each bedroom means that the field needs to handle two people. Thus our field can handle 8 people in the house per day.

On a per person basis that is not alot of water. And as a total amount of water its not much either.

Never thought about water usage from the waste side.

Just added up some quick numbers, I doubt we use 250-300 gallons per day.

Later,
Dan

Let me give you a different way of looking at this.

When we put in our septic field, I deliberately made it as large as possible. Given our soil, the county would only lets us go to one sized for a 4 BR house, but it rated at 450 gallons per day.

Now that works out to 0.31 gpm.

Unless you intend to irrigate, 1.5 gpm is a lot of water. Sure, you and I both would like to have 40 or 50 gpm, but Santa didn't bring that. What he did bring is 5 times as much water as you really need.

I'm not sure you can just divide it out like that for a whole day. If both folks work, kids in school, there might be 9-10 hours during the day where zero water is used. Same at night, after everyone is in bed there is only the occasional flush. Where you need the reserve is after dinner lets say. 2 baths running, some flushing, dishwasher going and maybe the washer is starting AND the plants are dying!! :D That's when you need it. To me it's about the same as a tankless water heater. They work fine if you don't demand gobs of hot water at once. And I like lots of water in my shower, I removed all those restrictors!!

Maybe 1.5 is enough.

JMHO,
Rob

My well is 360 ft deep. Static water level is within 20 ft of the top of the well and pump is just off the bottom. That gives about 500 gallons in the 6" hole. Recovery rate is just about what yours is at 1.5 gpm. In over 30 years, with a family of 5 we have never run out of water, and thats doing plenty of laundry and taking plenty of showers, etc.

If your static level is near the top of the well then you should have 800-900 gallons in the hole. More than enough to not worry about. Relax.

Mornin Hunteridge,
Madref has it right. Our well at my Ct home was 165 ft at about 1.5 gpm and the static height was 40 ft below grade. The pump was at 160 ft giving me only 180 gallons of reserve if that ! :( At the time I had both kids still living at home and along with all the showers and clothes that we were trying to do we had problems ! I brought in a rotary rig and went down to 450 ft. The operator said my gpm was worse than before digging deeper :( I got a frac rig to come in and bingo, flow rate came back and static height up to 30 ft below grade. I put the pump down to 400 ft and ended up with over 550 gal of reserve.

No more problems, and then wouldnt you know it, the kids grew up and moved out, now we really have plenty of water ! ;) :)

Ok, you guys have convinced me I have enough water for daily life.

It's just you always hear of people get 5,10,20 gpm that had me a little concerned.

I told my wife everyone on TBN said we were ok with 1.5 gpm:D . I thought I detected a slight eyeroll but not sure:eek:

When it comes to the greenhouses, they are a couple years off so I should have the county water ready for those.

I also get the eyeroll from the SO when I mention TBN. However I don't get any negative comment when I use TBN info to improve our life. I have mentioned that our household gets more positive benefits from TBN than from NOQ (national online quilters).
