Hey Tree Guy, thanks for the post! Definitely interesting stuff!

And I definitely would agree with you that the "Old Man" song by Neil Young... Awesome tune! Actually alot of Neil Young's other songs are great, too! ("Sugar Mountain", perhaps?)

I just found that in my manual too, I hadn't noticed that. The only thing I can think of is that Kubota feels it would put too much strain on the front axle bearings by increasing the forces put on them through leverage. Similar to when spacers are used between car brake drums/hubs and wheels to get a wider stance.

Ditto's on that, jam. The guy's a musical genius, no doubt about it! I ove Sugar Mountain, Cowgirl in the Sand, Cinnamon Girl, A Man Needs a Maid, so many more. Can't (don't want to) get the "Old Man" lick outta my head /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

On the tires, there's so much to consider, and what an important part of the tractor, where it interacts with the ground!

Feel free to ask any questions, I'm no expert, but I know a little, and I have read a LOT of posts written by actual "experts". Maybe just stay with the ags? I haven't heard any complaints about them except for turf damage, and the lead/lag on them was much better than the R4's as I recall.

Good luck, John

You should call your dealer and see if he'll give you a credit on the AGs if you decide not to keep them. As long as they're in good shape....

From what I remember of my research, I don't think the XM37's cited in that link can be gotten in sizes that give an acceptable lead ratio. This link Michelin XM27 Ag radial shows the tires that I ended up buying for my tractor. Excellent lead ratio, about 1 point-something percent IIRC, and one serious tire. Not sure if it will fit the frames of the Grand L's below the 5030.

Have you given up on your existing ags? Are you still thinking that the R4's will give you better stability and traction?
Is turf damage a consideration?

Ken, thanks very much for posting that link (aka the tread thread), that will be very handy. Those threads contain a wealth of information - didn't realize this site had the storage capacity to hold them all. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Among other highlights, I think one of the threads shows pictures of Bob Wolff of Woodbury (CT) Tractor on Glennmac's tractor, trying unsuccessfully, at Glenn's urging, to cause damage to his lawn. This is the kind of stuff that makes this site so great - real-life experiences shared so that we can make informed decisions.

To complicate things a bit, Michelin's website is referring to the XM27's as R4's - not sure what's up with that, I always thought they were technically R1-W's. If I find out anything definitive about that I'll post it.

Thanks again, John D.

CT_Tree_Guy,

They are an R-4 casing, very heavy casing verus the ag casing on the 108's. The 108's provide a better footprint and conform to the terrain a bit better. The R-4 casing adds stronger sidewalls, better puncture resistance and likely a harder rubber compound for better wear on pavement.
