I have a 10 ft landscape type trailer that needs a new deck. Current one is 5/4 1x6 PT which is screwed to the metal frame with a torx type screw.

Question:
What is the best wood to use when I replace the deck?
What are the chances of these screw being rusted to the metal frame and twisting off when I try to remove them?
If I do get them off, will I need a briiger screw to replace them.

Thanks

Don't know the first one, I like pressure treated myself but opinions will vary.
A very good chance.
No, just pick a new spot, the screws are self tapping.

Pressure treated wood is the way to go. Every fall I pressure wash the rear deck on my house and pressure wash the wood on my trailer at the same time. Then I spray sealer on both. Only takes a few minutes more to do the trailer. It's well worth the effort. I am fortunate enough to be able to put my trailer in a barn when it is not used. Trailers age quickly outdoors.

I would replace the wood with pressure treated lumber as well. More than likely the screws will be rusted and difficult to remove without breaking. Should you be able to remove them (possibly with the help of something such as a penetrating oil), I believe the same screw would be just fine as they are self tapping and will probably fit. Good luck, and let us know how it works out for you.

On my trailer those self taping screws did not come out. Had to break them off.:D

I have never replaced the wood on a trailer yet. From what I have seen I think using the existing screws would a lost cause. I wouldn't even start with out a tap and the drill for doing this. All new drilled and tapped holes would be easier than dealing with the old frozen bolts.

My bad, I meant to say the same screw size, not the same screw. I would agree that there would be no way to reuse the same screw.

As to the wood, I would find a local sawmill and buy rough cut oak lumber from them to use for decking. The oak will last longer than the steel trailer frame, at least you'll never have to do it again.

when i redid the deck on my 16ft trailer. i went to a saw mill and they cut me 2x9x16 out of telephone poles.it cost me about $10 more over treated and the broads are true size. made a very solid deck.
the old screws was not coming out like others have said
