new X540 or 2006 used x720????

JD,
The thing is the GX345 only has 255 hours on it and unless their is some issue with it I think I would keep it and save a bunch of cash. Since the new diesel x7xx machines are rated at 24hp (below the 25 hp threshold) I would consider moving up after the bugs are worked out in a year or two.

That's what I think. Unless the GX345 is giving trouble I'd keep it. I keep talking myself out of moving up from an X720 to X740 just to save some gas. I'd never make it back in what it save over gas but there's the convenience of having a 500 diesel tank here on the farm. I told her to get the diesel to begin with but she didn't want it but that's another story.

I know the feeling, I am in the opposite position. The only diesel machine I have is my X740, all the rest of my yard equipment is gas. I have to go out of my way to get diesel when I need it, as my station I purchase gas from does not carry diesel. However, it is still well worth it IMO. With the diesel option, you pretty much need to "buy it right" the first time, or else it's not justifiable at all. In 5 years when all of my debt is gone, I hope to pick up a 5085M. If I do that, I will have to purchase a bulk tank. There is no way I will stand at the gas station filling up 10 - 5 gallon cans!

I looked at a 2008 x740 with very low hours, 62? deck almost never used and 3ph at $6500.

In the end I went with a brand new x740 with the 7 iron deck at right around $9700. I wonder what a new 720 with std yellow deck would go for right now? Surely under $9000 outright and 6 model years newer.

The X740 is for finish mowing, and the 5M series will be for the heavy farm work. Buying more than you think you need is the best way to avoid being disappointed with performance.

One big motivating factor for the 5M series is the price. You can get a 5M series for the same price, in some extreme cases even cheaper, than a 4720 compact utility. The 4x20 has a cramped cab because it has to fit on the 4x20 frame. The 5M series cab is a world of difference in size, layout, and noise reduction. You have to ask yourself, why would you buy a 4x20 series when you could get a 5M for the same money?

For me, I have no tight areas to get into, so size isn't much of a worry. I have always loved machinery as a kid, the bigger the better. I only have 8 acres, but what the heck, you only live once!

Sorry, I should have specified.

You can get a 5065 for about the same money. I just WANT the 5085, but no, the 5085 cannot be had for 4720 money.

I seen a 5065 go at my local dealer about a month ago for 2,000 more than a 4720. I am not sure if it was a model clear out or what, but whoever bought it landed a good deal!

If you look on some of the online tractor sale sites, you can find 5065's for close to 4720 prices.
