New Year's dinner

i wonder why you all eat black eyed peas on new years? Is this a southern tradition, or is is jsut a coincidence becasue you all happen to like black eyed peas?

In my case, a little of both:D, but yes, it's a southern tradition to have blackeyed peas for luck on New Years Day. Of course, I enjoy them lots of other times as well. We spent the school year of '71-'72 at Northwestern University and lived west of Chicago. We could not find any blackeyed peas in the grocery stores up there. So when we came home for Christmas, I bought a case of them to take back. Then New Year's Eve a large group of friends had a potluck dinner and my wife fixed a big pot of blackeyed peas with diced ham. Most of those northerners had never eaten any before so we didn't know how well they'd go over, but that night there wasn't a single bite left.

Thanks Bird!
I never knew about Black eyed pease being a traditon for New Years. Now I guess I understand why you started the thread, to see how many other TBNers follow the souther tradition.

The traditional southern New Years Dinner of Hog Jowl's and Chittlins', black eyed peas, and collard greens is so you will have good health, good luck, and prosperity in the new year

Also dinner here is actually what most call lunch, and supper is what what most call dinner

Back when my wife and I first started dating it blew my mind when I heard their meal schedule:

Breakfast
Lunch
Dinner
Lunch
Supper
Midnight snack

That's alot of eating in a day! I usually just eat an afternoon and evening meal, six a day is crazy!

Our New Years meal was a 5 pound burger. Here's a picture of a 4 pounder we made a while back to practice...

I've neither made nor tried to eat any burgers over a half pound, but I did eat lunch at the Texas Hamburger Factory today.;) It sure beats McDonalds, Burger King, Whataburger, etc.

And like many others, I was grown before I ever ate "lunch". We had breakfast, dinner, and supper at our house and thought that was what everyone had.

Rox, if that burger was for one person, it sure wasn't me!

We used 4 pounds of ground beef. We cut it into 4 pieces and I struggled mightily to eat 1 piece. My wife didn't come close to eating her piece. I was set on lunch for the next week though!

More than anything, it was just something fun to do.
