There Amish people, the Amish don't have cars or stuff like that, they only have horse/buggy for travel. They do have tractors, but aren't allowed rubber wheels on the power vehicle. So all there tractors have steel wheels, which you can see in the pavement everywhere. You have to be careful in this area of Missouri, near Versailles... theres tons of horse and buggys on the road, always be careful poping up over a hill.

As far as there implements, they can have rubber on them.
I saw one that same day a guy with a older 50+ hp tractor (bid JD) dunno the #, but he had steel wheels, looked like they where 5 ft tall, pulling a dual flex wing brushhog w/tires in the field cutting down something. pretty neat, like the other guy said, it looks like a rough riding thing ;)

I still see them plowing fields with 1 plow or using sickle mowers with only one "horse" too. Lots of ancient machinery still in use.

Alot of them are from farms in Pennslyvania, i dunno much more, i guess there more prominent up there. The children only go to 8th grade, pretty secluded lives. Women wear buns or bon bon type hats, with flower dresses, knee high socks with black shoes, hair pulled back, no hair showing.
The men where dark or black pants, suspenders, straw hats most older gents have beards, and really look like it was some 50 years ago. There really friendly though!

I'm not stereotyping, just informing people that read this. :))
I think its a really neat way of life, something different, and very very old way of doing things.... definately a harder working, back breaking, simpler way of life.

The Amish around my parts can only use modern equipment for a business that is competing for customers. At the amish lumber mill they have fork lifts and the guys who build barns/sheds use air guns. I was talking with a few of them at the lumber mill and they said that the only equipment they can use is powered by natural gas. They said that the saw mill, fork lifts, and air compressors are run on natural gas. They are extremly hard workers and always willing to give me advice on my projects.

A couple of years ago I was mowing some hawthorn and heavy brush. 11 flats in two days. I built a set of tracks and put them on my 5300 jd. No more flats and awesome traction. Only took a day to build them. Haven't used them since, but they are easy to mount and take off. They sure take the fear out of where you go with them.

Tracks - hmmm. I have been thinking of foam in the front tires. As I have a lot of hawthorn, I suffer at least 2 or three flats per year. How do the tracks prevent flats? I'll bet the snow traction is incredible.

Its a neat way of life on the outside looking in..I think it is kind of odd there reasoning where they draw the lines on power tool/rubber tires and car owning.I seen a show on tv and have gotten the impression they are awfully strict and harsh on there children. I would prefer the life of a homesteader, versus a sect. I am not saying its all bad,but I cannot help to wonder if it is the best for the children, kind of an insulated society.
They are in Ohio and they have had troubles getting them to put flashing lights on there horse drawn buggies etc. I think if they depend on using the highway they should have to have license on there buggys etc and meet a lighting criteria on there vehicles/heck a person on a bicycle has to obey certain laws. I have to pay for license to use my vehicles on the open roadway.
I do like looking at there goods etc...and admire there abilitys and work ethic.I do not think there life style is as great and reasonable as everyone potrays it to be.
I use to work with a guy who had Amish for neighbors, they did not believe in owning cars, but offer them a ride to town and the whole family would climb in the car....no problems on a free ride. Go figure....
