NEXGEN valvoline 50% used oil

second current post on this stuff. I saw the stuff on an oil change special at advance for the same price as the virgin oil. I will buy virgin unless the additives thing is true about being close to syn?

Heck the stuff i pull out of the toyota after 6000+ miles (mobil 1) looks better than the stuff in my ranger at 1k miles. I may start putting that into the ranger now that im thinking about it. It burns leaks so much that i dont think it will be in there that long anyway.

Oil doesn't break down it actually gets better @ the molecular level the longer its "used" the thing that happens is oil gets polluted with burnt and un-burnt fuel (carbon) etc and changes color and isn't pure oil any more it gets abrasive and corrosive.:

I've been told this for over 50 years. If accurate, then all oil could be "re-refined" and perhaps should be. I don't know.

I have understood that 90% of the oil returned via re-cycling, is used more as industrial cutting oils and such, which aren't as picky as engine applications. Again, I do not know. With better information by experts, we could make better decisions about "re-refined" oil.

BP,

Me too I first learned it on a tour of the Oahe dam on the Missouri river in South Dakota many moons ago. The giant turbines are sitting on huge flat segmented bearings and pressure lubed with a closed circuit lube system that uses 50wt non detergent motor oil.

The oil is tested continuously in their lab and all they do is filter it and centrifuge it and return back to service. The oil in there now is the same oil that they put in in 1952 with only new oil added to keep it topped off.

The molecules actually get "polished" is how the guy described it he said the oil is better now then when it was put in back in the early 50's they have an additive package that they spec out for their purpose its all very interesting.

I have dumped perfectly good oil for the 30 years I been in business and I have never once forgot that tour and what that guy taught me.

Thanks for the info. I had a machinist uncle who used to leave the oil in his cars forever; he said it just improved with age. I always thought he was kidding, I'll have to check that out.

It may never wear out but it does need more advanced filtering than a automotive oil filter is capable of doing, they will filter the june bugs and rodents out but thats about it. ;)

I know a guy that started doing the no oil change thing back in the 70's and he had a dodge ramcharger that all he ever did was top it off and once he brought it in to have me change the valve cover gaskets several years ago he ran it about 20 years w/o an oil change.

edit: his pet name for the ram was "puff the magic ramcharger" and you can well understand why- it smoked like crazy when it started up from those oil returns and push rod slots in the heads plugged for so many years and the rings had to be a solid mass also.

HOLY SLUDGE batman it was shaped like the inside of the valve cover a chunk of grunge that is unbelievable I dug it out with a spoon just a horrible mess.

If the oil is truly re-refined then it is as good as virgin oil. When they run it thru the furnaces at about 1800F it is vaporized and each component is then cycled off as it condenses. None of the solids or acids remain in it. A job I worked on in the Canadian Oil sands for Syncrude made their oil from tar laden sand. They ran it thru a fluidized bed coker first whereas USA refineries use Cokers as the final treatment of all the sludge and heavy tars that remain after the cat crackers and hydrotreaters and desulfurization steps are done. Anyway, they heat it, drive off all the hydrocarbons, pull out the diesel that they use for running all the mine equipment, then pump hydrogen back into it which they get from reforming natural gas and turn it into synthetic sweet blend oil that sells for $5 a barrel more than straight crude oil. It looks just like honey in color when finished. With hydrocarbons, you can change them into all kinds of stuff with heat, catalyst and right chemical processing and they are all the same stuff till each oil company blends in their proprietary additives which makes them then a little different. I have worked in and constructed refineries for Shell, Exxon and Chevron and they all use the same processes to extract the light gases like propane all the way to asphalt and finally coke which is sold to steel manufacturers for basically the transport cost if they are lucky just to get rid of it. What they put in after this process in their gasoline and motor oils is what makes the difference in quality, mileage etc. I dont think I would have a problem with using re-refined oil produced by major oil companies if it meets the same API classification. Oil doesnt wear out it just changes properties and can be rebuilt to the same properties with proper addition of the right compounds.

we been using re-refined 15W40 since about 2003/2004. Run it in all our GM 6.5L's, DD 8V92's, DD series 60, Cat 3116, 3126, C7, C15, and cummins NHC250 and 8.3. Havn't had a oil related failure. Also, most of these engines get oil analysis, and we saw no change in results after switching from virgin. It cost us about 30% less per 55 Gl drum.
