Guys, the weather has not been cooperative with my schedule. I had planned on working on it today, but its 60 degrees and raining. Thanks for all the tips. I plan to drain all the fuel and replace with new to start out. Then move on to checking each injector by running it and cracking them open to see if there's a change. I can get it to run enough to do this. Thanks and I'll keep you posted.

Casingbill:

A question for you; has your tractor run out of fuel? What you described is how the tractor would run if there were air in the fuel line. On a diesel engine if they are allowed to run empty, then are refueled, the fuel line must be bled to get the air bubbles out. Until then it will run just as you describe.

Your owners manuel should detail the (easy) procedure to correct this.

No, it didn't run out of fuel. I have bled the line going into the pump several times to be sure. I think I should change the fuel lines just to be sure that I'm not sucking air. Hopefully next weekend I will be able to work on it. I have a bad feeling about it though. There was so much junk in the glass bowl and the filter that I think it may have screwed up the pump. We'll see.

Ok, I'm not doing to good so far. This is what I did today.

Drained the fuel and put fresh in.
Changed the filter again.
Took the kinks out of the return lines.
Removed the fuel line from filter to pump to be sure it was clear, which it was.
Then while running, I started to crack the lines at the injectors.
#1)Cracked the line and there was no change.
#2)Cracked the line and it stalled.
#3)Restarted. Cracked the line and it stalled.
#4) Now it won't run long enough to check #4.

Crack all the lines at the injectors. Crank the engine until you get fuel coming out the lines. This may take alot of cranking since you've had so many things apart. As each line starts to spray fuel tighten it up. This should get all the air out. If you don't get any fuel you will have to start working backwards. Remove the line that supplys fuel to the injector pump. Are you getting good flow. If you are it is most likely the pump.(hope not)

I've got great flow going into the pump. I am pretty sure that there is fuel going to each injector but I am gonna check again. Thanks.

My tractor was doing the same thing after I changed my fuel filter. When I changed my fuel filter, the little plastic shut off valve inside the fuel filter body didn't quite open all the way after I finished changing the filter and turned it back on. The tractor did idle okay but it would break up when I gave it throttle and it never reached full rpms.

The shut off valve on the fuel filter bowl was the culprit. I had to loosen the set screw on the handle and remove it. Behind the handle was a plastic valve with a screwdriver slot head that the aluminum handle slips into. The plastic slot was stripped and didn't let the handle open completely to a full open position. It only took another 30 degrees more with a wide screwdriver blade to get my tractor to open back up at full rpm and full throttle.

Sounds like your 1920 was acting up before you changed your fuel filter. Something to check anyway.

OK...there is fuel going into each injector. When I went out earlier today to fiddle with it again, It would start and run enough to check. When I crack open that first injector, there is virtually no change in how it runs. I am thinking that I should pull all the injectors to have them checked. As soon as I crack open the second one, it stalls. The third one won't stall it but it does run a little worse. The fourth will stall it. I think I need to have them all checked.

It is starting to look like a weak pump (not delivering enough pressure) and or bad injectors (injector always open) or the timing is off to me.
I still would like to hear if there is any air coming out of the fuel return line or not. Leave the fuel lines on the injectors, if there would be any air in there the engine would skip (miss), but the engine should keep on running (rough if it would be missing all the time). The tractor has no skipping problem, it has a starvation problem. Starvation also can occur with a weak pump.
Maybe someone else has a better comment?

I would agree. Maybe one or more is partially or fully plugged.

Although you probably already know this, once you get the engine back to running fine, consider changing your fuel supply, storage, or both. You should not be getting gunk in the fuel filter bowl on a routine basis. It should be the rare exception rather than the norm.
