NH-30, JD 790

Does anyone know what the story is with the New Holland NH30 and John Deere 790, as far as what they are really designed for? They seem to be segregated from the other tractors on their respective web sites. Are they light duty tractors that will eventually be showing up at Home Depot , Lowes, or maybe Walmart?
I am curious if it would be better to focus on the NH Boomer series or the JD 3000 series, to avoid a light duty consumer grade machine. Any info is appreciated.

I looked at the 790 when I bought mine. I ended up w/ a used 1070 which has been replaced by the 990. The 790 was a nice machine. I don't think you will see them at the depot. Sturdy machine.

The 790/990 tractors are just bare bones utility tractors. They do not have all the features of the 2000 or 4000 series like a hydrostatic trans, cupholders, air seats, ect.

They are very popular, due to price and alot of people just want a basic machine.

I do not think you will see them at a big box store!

Is there something specific you are looking for?

The JD 790 may be a basic tractor but I wouldn't call it light duty and isn't cheaply made. That is a Yanmar tractor and if the capabilities fit your needs, it would last a lifetime. The TC30 has been around since New Holland was Ford. I would guess durability to be similar. The NH had a more open platform than the JD.

I tried the 790 and the tc30. I bought a kubota b7800 and I can tell you that
the hydrostatic tranny is really nice for loader work. In my area kubota was alot better price! The b7800 fits my needs. Have fun tractor shopping!

Both are great tractors by two good Japanese manufacturers. Yanmar(790) and Shibaura (TC-30). Both are designed for a life time of use and durability. Being color blind and comparing their respective specifications then TC-30 will win. The main thing I can remember is 3-point lift capacity of TC-30 that is much better than 790 and is a bit more stable platform.

I agree with Jetro on this one. The TC 30 will outspec the JD a bit but that's not throwing off on the 790. It is one fine durable piece of equipment as it is manufactured by Yanmar for John Deere. I owned a YM 1700 for 14 years prior to purchasing a NH 1720. The 1720 is very similiar to the TC 30. In the 14 years that I owned that Yanmar I never spent one dime on repairs other than maintenance. The 790 will be the same. I trust that my 1720 is as durable. I have no reason to doubt it.

Will those units ever be sold at Home Depot or Lowes? I doubt it. I can understand the lower end lawn mowers and homeowner units but not lifetime tractors. And I classify the JD 790 and TC 30 as lifetime units.

* TC-30 has Hydro trans option, 790 does not.
TC-30 has also higher FEL capacity.
790 is also 4" longer and 3" wider and both machine are nimble when it comes to tight corners.
No plastics in either tractor that I like a lot. I'll be happy with either one, but if I had to make a choice for under 30 hp, then I would have to go with TC-30.

Thanks for all of the good info guys. A bare bones utility tractor is what I am looking for I don't care about cup holders, or the rest of the fu-fu. I was nervous that they may have some proprietary 3 point or something that would only allow you to use the corporate implements. I will have to check out the Kubota B7800, as well. While you are checking the Kubota 7800 be sure to check the Kubota 2800 as well.
