I have owned the TC30 for 3 years and it is all I need for my 6 ac. The best old man toy I have. I do not see any junk out there unless chinese and I have not been around any, as always the service that you get and dealer should have a lot to do with a person purchase my 2 cent worth. MD

Just for the sake of comparison;

------------------- 790------------TC-30
Displacement--------81.2-----------91.3 cubic inches
HP------------------27.0-----------30.0 nominal HP
PTO HP--------------24------------25.5 manual trans.*
Gear----------------8x2------------9x3
Brakes--------------dry------------wet
Hyd pump-----------9.9------------9.6 total gpm
Implement-----------5.6------------6.1
Steering-------------4.3------------3.5
Lift capacity---------815------------1635 Lbs, 24 inch aft of the hitch point
PTO system---------2stage live-----2stage live
weight 2WD, R1------1930-----------2193 Lbs

* TC-30 has Hydro trans option, 790 does not.
TC-30 has also higher FEL capacity.
790 is also 4" longer and 3" wider and both machine are nimble when it comes to tight corners.
No plastics in either tractor that I like a lot. I'll be happy with either one, but if I had to make a choice for under 30 hp, then I would have to go with TC-30.

One reason why I am such a fan of my 1720 is that it outspecs the TC30 in weight, 3pt lift, and wheelbase. The only thing that is under the TC 30 is 27 HP versus 30 HP eventhough they both have the same 91 cu in engine. I personally like my 12x12 shuttle better than the 9x3 or hydro. I guess that I am a gear guy.

I may be wrong but it appears to me that 1700 series or in general 1000 series are built more stout, respectable casting and very easy to maintain. I have a plain Jane two banger 1700 and really like it. I don't think I will ever let go of it when I upgrade to a better rig with the fel. 1700 is such a good work horse for me. I don't think TC-30 is as stout as 1700 or 1720. Rated Hp is good to look at but with my diesel I hardly ever run it much beyond 1200-1500 rpm for most tasks and it has all the torque I need. I use it at rated 2500 rpm also but only when I need it. I think 790 more compares with ford 1700 than 1720. Certainly, 1720 is a more capable machine that 1700.

It appears though better deals can be had purchasing a TC-30 than a 790.

Two years ago I looked at both plus other brands. I decide on the T30 and still think that in my area it was the best deal. The TC30 was described to me by the dealer as a working tractor as opposed to the Boomer series. He used the term play toy describing the TC29 etc. Now he didn't mean to dispect the Boomers, he was just pointing out that the TC30 is all METAL, no frills, no fancy computerized gauges to go on the blink etc. He described it right the TC30 with gear tranny and 4wd works like a lot bigger tractor.

I sat on both a TC30 and TC29DA and although I liked the price of the former my aging body "fit" the more ergonomically designed "29" more comfortably. I went with the 29. I am not a fan of of all the plastic, but at least it will not rust and so far I have scratched (adds character :)), but not cracked anything. I do not like not having real functional turning brakes on the 29 and the differential lock is not the best so I will accept the "play toy" comment :D. I really do like the HST with all the FEL and RC work I need to do- Jay
