I inherited a 271 bailer a 478 and 495 mower The bailer and 478 are both in a barn and look moderatly serviceable. the 495 has disapeared under a briar patch. Does any one have books for any of these. I need to know what hp they run on and if they are likely to be a money pit for repairs.

Check these guys for documentation...CNH Publications @ 800-635-4913

Big issue is, have you run the baler? Does the plunger operate without sounding like cats fighting on the back fence...

Contact Champlain Valley Equipment 802-388-4967...pay to have one of the mechanincs come out and give them a once over and give you an honest opinion...

There's a guy on eBay who sells good used manuals for all such equipment. They come 2 days later. I don't see how you can loose with these pieces. Cutters only need good belts and tires. You can recondition the cutter bars yourself. Convert to bolted sections if rivets were used.

Baler is wire or twine? If twine, convert to plastic.

Just grease them up, pour old motor oil on the sickle bar and drive chains, roll them over slowly. Look on the New Holland website for parts & pictures.

Is the 495 a 12' mower? That usually drives a wider rake and a high capacity baler throat. The other mower is a 9' deal and more likely to go thru standard gates. I've liked using a 495 because the swing tongue allows you to a neater job in the field, especially in odd shaped fields. However, it can get confusing if you hurry thru a gate.

You can roll the baler over by hand. When it seems to be free, trip the knotter drive and watch it spin up. These machines were designed to run a tree thru them so you can't break them if the shear pins, friction brakes and retraction springs are properly spec'd.

What exactly have you got to loose?

Post some pictures and get some free estimates...

The 271 baler is a good model with some size or capacity to it and should have at least 50 pto horsepower or more on it and should be 70's vintage.
The 478 is about the same period as well as the 495 although the 478 is a nine foot model about 40 to horsepower and the 495 is twelve foot cut and should have about 70 pto horsepower. The 495 will tow length wise for road use and was also a good machine in it's day!
Manuals should be availabe for all of these machines through the dealer or often found on ebay.

ug and i was excited to run the 95. well that may be another day if i get ahold of a ag for trenching it will be strong enough to run the 95 :/ i have a 45 to run the other two it is twine currently. as for grease suggestions would be appriciated. use standard grease gun for zerks just aim the nozle?

The bailer still has a bail in it that is years old and it looks to be missing a belt or 3. will see about pics probably tomorow.
