Wet lined??? What might that be?

   / NH coolant Poll #12
Jim, I'm not a diesel expert, but I believe a "wet lining" is when the engine's removable cylinder liners are in direct contact with the coolant and are not fitted into a water jacket. I believe our engines have a non-wet lining that is fitted inside a water jacket and is a permanent non-removable lining. Therefore, the coolant comes into direct contact with a wet lining. Our engines would have indirect cooling where heat from the lining is transmitted to the water jacket and then to the coolant.

The issue with wet linings is that when the fuel ignites, it creates a shockwave. The lining wall transmits the shock to the coolant and creates cavitation bubbles. These bubbles actually become abrasive agents and will eat away at the lining walls, causing them to pit. If this is correct, I'm sure it's also an oversimplification of the problem too, but only wet lined engines have this problem.

I hope I haven't "lied" to you too much. If I have, I'm sure someone will correct me. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Are you sure?
You have exlpained it better then I could!
But then I am definetly no expert.

Good example of a wet linning is a old ford 7.3 L V8 diesel, which they nolonger make.
Sometimes you may hear of "cavitation" which is the term some use for this. The 7.3 L need an aditive to prevent corosion. In some cases guys have had leaks develop at 150 K miles, which is relatively young for a diesel engine.
I don't think there is a good fix for it when it happens, other than engine rebuild.
The good news is it's not possible in a TN engine.

I've got a better idea...don't ever change it and you won't have to worry about it /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Antifreeze has got to be one of the biggest scams in America. Unlike oil it should never pick up any contaminants and due to the very slight temperature differences the mixture will only ever see, it will probably last as long as your tractor without ever changing it. However, most people would rather be precautious instead of taking an engineers' word for it, so do what you must /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

By the way, always buy the cheapest gasoline, as the differences between any two brands of the same octane is non-existent /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Challenge everything!

I agree with Jim as I don't think that the importance should be on any brand name so long as you use a anti-freeze and in the proper mix.

Phred; Right you are. I get FW15 sold at my International Truck dealer. Same stuff as Ford, but cheaper. I'm concerned about my TC35 eating out the liners, bit the NH dealer really couldn't offer much help. I do know if you over treat the coolant, you run a good chance of eating out the waterpump seals, at least that is on the 7.3 stroker. ShopDiesel website has alot of good info on the Strokers that might be pertinent to our littler diesels.

Most New Holland dealers should also have FW15 instock the New Holland part number is FW15DS. This was used a lot in our older engines because of cavitation.

Johnday,

I also have run it in 7.3 L. Comes in a little bottle and you add it to antifreeze. They also make little test strips, like ltimus paper, that let you check if it's in their at the right level.

Guys,

I think your right, assuming we are talking about the newer diesels. Just run the cheapest antifreeze you can find.

I don't think this is the case in the older diesels.
