I am ready to purchase a new tractor and am considering NH & JD. The JD has a "direct injection" engine, and the NH has an "indirect injection" engine. Anyone know the difference?

NH and kubota are indirect injected meaning the combustion chamber is in the cavity of the head. Direct injection injects the fuel directly on top of the piston. Most high tech motors are direct injected as is the ford power stoke 7.3.. I believe the Kubotas over 50hp are direct. The type of injection is not that important in a compact tractor as much as the features and financing are. Both types will perform well.

Indirect injection engines use pre-combustion chambers. I have a vague recollection that there are small advantages to each type. Something like direct is more efficient but indirect is smoother. There may be some maintenance implications as well. However, differences between the two injection systems probably wouldn't be a very significant reason to buy a particular tractor for most people.

Direct injection is easier to start than indirect (not considering any help like glow plugs, engine heaters etc.), and direct is more fuel efficient than indirect by 15 - 25% (rule of thumb)
