Guess you hadn't had your morning coffee yet and still weren't totally awake. I think he was just having a little fun kinda like another thread a few days ago about like the TV commercial and the bulleys - You talkin' ta me? That kinda thing.

If you are going to run an 84" deck you might want to get a Tc33D instead. The few extra horses might make the difference in successfully being able to use the bigger deck.

Well I called the dealer and asked him if I could put an 84" deck on a TC29D. He looked up the specs and told me that the TC29D had plenty of horse power to run that large of a deck. I asked him if I should just go for the TC33D and he told me that Horse Power helps you pull or push but is not going to determit how large of a deck that I can run.

Is he correct?
Most of my yard is open meadow but there are a few trees to navigate around. It will take me about 5 hours to cut with a 72" deck. I was hoping that an 84" deck would cut my time down.

If I were you I would get a few more opininons from other dealers about the 84 inch deck, I personnaly feel it is too big for the tractor your looking at. The horsepower is only for pushing or pulling the mower, well by that statement my 21 horse B-7500 would pull the mower but without the blades moving it doesn't cut grass too well. Look at the brochers of the mower your considering it should tell you how much PTO horsepower you will need, I don't know what the TC 29 PTO power is but I suspect it to be around 25 which is probably at the bare minimum for the 84 inch deck. I'm not trying to imply your dealer is wrong I'm sure he knows a great deal more about tractors than I, but a second opinion couldn't hurt. Good luck with your purchase have fun and be safe./w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

/w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif You're probably right. I hope so! /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

And the part about not having my morning coffee? Well, you must be a mind reader. As I was walking in to the office, the handle on my travel cup just fell off. Actually, to be more precise, the cup fell off of the handle while I was holding it. So, I was about 2 cups low when I replied to Kodiak.

Thanks.

Yes & No
It does help you push & pull but that's really more related to torque, which you typically get more of with a larger HP engine.

You do need a minimum HP to run a mowing deck. It takes X amount of power just to overcome the friction in the unit + the air resistance of spinning the blades. Add grass & your power requirement goes up. Taller grass requires more HP.

I had a 60" landpride 1560 mower on my TC18 (14 PTO HP). If I engaged it at low RPM it would stall the tractor. I was definitely at the bottom end of being able to run it. I have the 60" MMM now & it seems to require less HP. I think it has lower lift blades & runs them at a slower speed.

Being an engineer, I'll break it down in a quantitative analysis for you:
I have 60"/14 PTO HO = 4.28" per HP
If you go with 84 you will have 84/24 = 3.5" per HP
if you go with 72 you will have 72/24 = 3" per HP
TC33 with 84 84/27 = 3.1" per HP
High end push mower 21/6 = 3.5" per HP
Low end push mower 21/3.5= 6" per HP

We all know how easy it is to stall that 3.5HP push mower in tall grass.

My numbers are artificially low because you will need to use some HP to move the tractor, but you get the idea.

If you have flat land and follow the 1/3 mowing rule get the 84
If you have hilly land, or regularly let the grass get tall before you cut, go with the 72 (or the TC33)

Hope this helps.

I wonder if you might not really see the decrease in cutting time compared to the 72" that you are expecting. The mower would tend to bog more, causing you to slow down, and the larger unit might tend to overlap passes a little more. You MIGHT get done quicker with the 72"

Maybe

Maybe you could get to try them on your place...

Give some thought to the NH rear discharge mid-mount-mowers. NH is the only company making a rear discharge mid-mount and some people really like'em. Also, for a few bucks more I would go with the TC33D. The engine has a larger displacement and probably won't have to work as hard to spin a big mower.

If you are budget-minded (like myself) go with the TC30. Its an economy class tractor with the same engine as the TC33D and the same transmission as the TC29D. It has slower hydraulics and few less bells and whisltes but I am really glad I choose one over the TC33D and saved myself about $3,000 bucks.

Oh yeah, whatever you buy, you should install a horn. That way, when you're showing off and nobody is paying attention, you can alert them to your prescence so that they don't miss any of the amazing things you will be doing with your tractor /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Hi Ya Jerry!

I think maybe you wanted to address your reply to JohnRager, right? I know you wouldn't be telling me this stuff - yet - right? /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I like mine too, too bad it cost $1,000 more than the RFM's!

Have you started work on a cloaking device yet for those times when you need to be discrete, ie when you're doing some not so amazing things like running over the wife's flowers./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
